Awards for MAI Youth Art Showcase being presented at the opening of the art workspace.

The aim of the Youth Art Showcase is to encourage and nurture creativity among children and young people from Mangawhai and the surrounding areas. From 1st July until 30th September young people from 4 - 20, in 5 age categories, were invited to send an artwork to our on-line exhibition.
Once the entries closed, 16 people prominent in our community were asked to select their favourite artwork and say why they liked it. These photos show some of the award recipients receiving their art packs from Hinurewa te Hau (Creative Northland) and Annie Ackerman (The Big Idea) at the opening of Mangawhai Art Workspace .

A very special day! Mangawhai Art Workspace has been officially opened - thanks to Mayor Jason Smith and Kaumatua Ben Hita. Great to see councillors Peter Wethey, Jonathan Larsen and deputy mayor Anna Curnow, other invited guests and many Mangawhai people sharing in the occasion. Thanks also to Totally Uked our fabulous local ukulele band. The new building will be a venue for art courses and workshops. Information can always be found at and
The Art Workspace is dedicated to the memory of Lynn Middleton, who died a year ago and is sadly missed.

LAST FOUR DAYS TO ENTER our Youth Art Showcase. Entries close at midnight on Wednesday 30 September. See all the wonderful artworks at Click on an image and read the interesting things the artists have written about their work.
Juno Ruddenklau, aged 9, made this mandala-style artwork called 'Springtime'. Juno says "I have been playing around with a drawing compass to make colourful designs. For my final artwork I used A3 paper, a mechanical pencil, a ruler, a 0.2 black pen, an eraser, and lots of coloured pencils. It took me a long time to make it really detailed."

There are wonderful art packs to be won. Art packs differ for each age level.

Kids' school holiday art classes. What is QUILLING?

It is a wonderful craft for children who like making their own Christmas and birthday presents. Quilling or paper filigree is an art form that involves the use of strips of paper that are rolled, shaped, and glued together to create decorative designs.

Raewyn Vague will be teaching children how to make things with quilling. She has a class for 8-10 year olds on Monday 5 October and on Tuesday 6 October she has a 10 years+ group.

Raewyn says "This class will be an introduction to the art of Quilling. You will learn how to make cards, boxes, and a pencil holder and then decorate them with quilled shapes."

Cost: $25.00 + $10 materials fee.

Mangawhai Artists Workspace - our story as it progresses.

Early in 2019 Mangawhai Artists Inc fundraised to build an extension to the Mangawhai Artists Gallery, behind our existing gallery at 45 Moir St, which will be known as Mangawhai Art Workspace. This new space will be used for expanding our art workshop programme, allowing our Gallery to be used exclusively for exhibitions.

We thank all those in our community who supported our fundraising efforts.

The building project has now commenced. Follow progress of the Workspace building on this page.

We gratefully acknowledge and thank Placemakers Mangawhai, our building partner.
