'We stayed four nights at Pete and Lucy’s accommodation and believe we stayed at the absolute best place on the island.

It’s not five star, it’s not for people who need everything perfect and ‘just so’ – but if you’re like us and want an authentic, surprising and easy stay, then I recommend this wholeheartedly! The house is 98 years old, and it’s on the most incredible piece of land right on the water – you could not ask for more. We arrived and lay down on a blanket on the lawn, bathing in the afternoon sun, as a seal rested about 50m away.

We didn’t use the (nice) shower once – we had a star bath on the hill every night, such a treat, and what amazing memories we have. On the first night there were no clouds so we saw the whole milky way and hundreds of thousands of stars and even a comet!!

The weather was around 18/19 degrees which was fine, but we put the open fire on each night, pulled a mattress beside it and had such lovely evenings together. The house will be cold in areas in the winter, so rug up, but with the mixture of the baths and the open fire which cranks out the heat you can always get toasty.

Pete caught some snapper and delivered it in banana leaves for our breakfast – amazing!

As for the island – the fact that sums up our experience is that almost 50% of islanders live alone – this is a place that many people escape to, to get away from people! So despite there often being a lot of people on the island at any one time, it always feels deserted.

You want to go there with someone you are happy to spend a lot of one-on-one time with as there aren’t many opportunities to interact with others, you need to make your own fun. Interestingly, you definitely need to book in advance to eat dinner, we had great meals at the Currach and we wanted to go to Great Barrier Lodge but it was booked out.

It’s worth noting that opening hours / days of cafes and restaurants are a bit all over the place, so it pays to bring some food with you too. The cooking facilities at Pete and Lucy’s are great – their wee cooker works so well I want one myself! We spent our days relaxing and exploring all the far flung beaches – they are so beautiful and deserted you can easily go for skinny dips! Totally recommend doing that regardless of the season – you feel so amazing once you dive in! It’s a a bit of fun.

We loved it and had such quality time together, the pace is slow and there aren’t lots of tourist attractions so you need to be able to cruise and make most of wherever each day takes you. We considered scooters but were pleased we hired a car in the end as we travelled far. We’re so glad we went, and SO happy we stayed with Pete and Lucy, can’t recommend enough.'

We loved this review from recents guests - lovely but totally honest and a great review for future guests to help decide if Tryphena House is right for them.

[10/16/20]   Here's a little update from us...

We have made a few changes for this summer. We will no longer be renting out watersports gear or electric bikes and scooters. We will just be concentrating on our accommodation.
We can highly recommend Motubikes near Claris airport and there are several places to hire kayaks on the island.

We are happy to take some advanced bookings, so please give Pete a call and he will be able to advise if we can fit a booking in around guests.

We hope you all have a lovely summer on Aotea

Great Barrier Island

Hello Level 2(.5) on Aotea/Great Barrier Island!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It's time to get out and support our local businesses. We have three awesome cafés on Aotea serving delicious organic coffee, teas and baked goodies for you to indulge in... ☕☕☕
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Support local, but keep eachother safe.
1. Record your movements with the COVID tracer app (thats right even on remote Aotea we use apps!)
2. Wear a mask when entering public spaces.
3. Wash, wash, wash your hands.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Shot taken in Mulberry Grove Café and store.

Top tip: They've got a great space to sit with a coffee and face out over uninterrupted views of Tryphena Harbour or grab that last jar of Barrier honey before you hop on the ferry.

Great Barrier Island

As we sit in Alert level 3 again on Aotea/Great Barrier Island we are forced to spend more time reflecting on 2020 and the whirlwind it has been.

Regardless of alert levels, Aotea always provides a sanctuary to slow down, reflect and take stock of what truly matters in life. For now we protect our borders and people but we look forward to when we can welcome you back and share our sanctuary with you.

We love this beautiful and calming shot capturing Hirakimata - Thank you Carol Comer Photography

We are making fresh pasta each day for our winter warmers. Alessandro is changing flavors and styles often to keep things interesting.

We also have a delicious breakfast special of French toast made with our own brioche bread, poached pears and berry mascarpone

So good.

Island Gin

Happy World Gin Day 2020 from Tryphena House.

Great Barrier Island has one of the most remote distilleries in the Southern Hemisphere.

To celebrate we'll be heading down to the Currach Irish Pub & The Innkeeper's Lodge for gin tasting this evening with Island Gin.

This has got us feeling nostalgic about summer. We can't wait to come in from a day on the fishing, beaching, hiking or paddling and sit on the deck, pour a G&T just the way we like it and watch the world go over Tryphena Harbour. 🌿🍸

Happy World Gin Day from our part of the world to yours.
For your chance to win a luxe long weekend over here on Great Barrier Island go to islandgin.com for details.
We are one of the most remote distilleries in the Southern Hemisphere.
I hope wherever you are in the world today you will be enjoying a gin just the way you like it.

The Wilderness 100: The 8 best trips in Northland and Auckland - Wilderness Magazine

Great Barrier Island's Aotea Track featured in the Wilderness Mag top 100. One of the best 8 trips around Auckland and Northland.

It takes you through Aucklands largest conservation park and only a quick 30 minute flight from Auckland.

So how can you make the most of the Aotea track AND stay with us at at Tryphena House. Simple really. Heres what we recommend...

Hop off the plane in Claris- book a shuttle to the Aotea Track, we recommend the Green gate entrance- contact us if you need a hand

Spend 2 nights completing the Aotea Track. Heading back down via the Kaitoke Natural hot springs for a well deserved soak

Book a shuttle to Tryphena House or to a local car rental to pick up a car or if you are a big group - a van from Aotea Car Rentals (This depends on how much more exploring you'd like to do!)

What else can you see and do?

City guides: Auckland through the eyes of a local

Have you ever wondered why Auckland is a city of sails? Perhaps because its actually a city of islands...

Great Barrier Island is the jewel in the crown- with the largest sheltered harbour in the Hauraki gulf.
Come ashore or fly over to experience innovative, self sufficient offgrid style living and accommodation, Aucklands largest conservation park, the most incredible stars you can experience within a city region and friendly locals who are happy to share these experiences with you.

We are pleased to feature in this great City Guide article with Good Heavens, @star treks and Motubikes. Local businesses using their local knowledge and friendly welcome to share their corner of Auckland with you.

Hello to all our Followers,

Update:
We will be closing our main operation from now until September. We are using this time to make some tweaks to our product for all those backyard travellers we expect to see in next season. Our beautiful old Tryphena House will be seeing some touch ups over winter and we will be saving up our energy for next seasons restart.

Pete may be the duracel bunny but will need a recharge before next season! We think its going to be BIG for the Barrier and excited to welcome visitors back in full force.
We also have some other tricks up our sleeves we are hoping to launch for next season. Watch this space.

Two things we will be doing this winter:

- Scooter bookings - Weather permitted by enquiry only

- Outdoor bath experiences - If you are staying in the Tryphena Area would like to experience the night sky soaking in our outdoor bath tubs. Complimentary Natural bath bombs and chocolate included. Details to follow. Send us an enquiry.

See you next season.
