Waterfront group accommodation at Tryphena House on Great Barrier Island. Watersports gear including kayaks, paddleboards and fishing gear available to guests.
Please note we have stopped hiring electric bikes and scooters
Operating as usual
Here's a little update from us...
We have made a few changes for this summer. We will no longer be renting out watersports gear or electric bikes and scooters. We will just be concentrating on our accommodation.
We can highly recommend Motubikes near Claris airport and there are several places to hire kayaks on the island.
We are happy to take some advanced bookings, so please give Pete a call and he will be able to advise if we can fit a booking in around guests.
We hope you all have a lovely summer on Aotea
Great Barrier Island
Hello Level 2(.5) on Aotea/Great Barrier Island!
It's time to get out and support our local businesses. We have three awesome cafés on Aotea serving delicious organic coffee, teas and baked goodies for you to indulge in... ☕☕☕
Support local, but keep eachother safe.
1. Record your movements with the COVID tracer app (thats right even on remote Aotea we use apps!)
2. Wear a mask when entering public spaces.
3. Wash, wash, wash your hands.
Shot taken in Mulberry Grove Café and store.
Top tip: They've got a great space to sit with a coffee and face out over uninterrupted views of Tryphena Harbour or grab that last jar of Barrier honey before you hop on the ferry.

Great Barrier Island
As we sit in Alert level 3 again on Aotea/Great Barrier Island we are forced to spend more time reflecting on 2020 and the whirlwind it has been.
Regardless of alert levels, Aotea always provides a sanctuary to slow down, reflect and take stock of what truly matters in life. For now we protect our borders and people but we look forward to when we can welcome you back and share our sanctuary with you.
We love this beautiful and calming shot capturing Hirakimata - Thank you Carol Comer Photography

We also have a delicious breakfast special of French toast made with our own brioche bread, poached pears and berry mascarpone
You are right! We aren't visible on airbnb right now. Fear not - we know. We will be reopening our listing in August ready for September onwards.

Happy World Gin Day 2020 from Tryphena House.

Have you ever wondered why Auckland is a city of sails? Perhaps because its actually a city of islands...
Great Barrier Island is the jewel in the crown- with the largest sheltered harbour in the Hauraki gulf.
Come ashore or fly over to experience innovative, self sufficient offgrid style living and accommodation, Aucklands largest conservation park, the most incredible stars you can experience within a city region and friendly locals who are happy to share these experiences with you.
We are pleased to feature in this great City Guide article with Good Heavens, @star treks and Motubikes. Local businesses using their local knowledge and friendly welcome to share their corner of Auckland with you.
stuff.co.nz The city's diversity really does make it the de facto cultural capital of the South Pacific.
Hello to all our Followers,
We will be closing our main operation from now until September. We are using this time to make some tweaks to our product for all those backyard travellers we expect to see in next season. Our beautiful old Tryphena House will be seeing some touch ups over winter and we will be saving up our energy for next seasons restart.
Pete may be the duracel bunny but will need a recharge before next season! We think its going to be BIG for the Barrier and excited to welcome visitors back in full force.
We also have some other tricks up our sleeves we are hoping to launch for next season. Watch this space.
Two things we will be doing this winter:
- Scooter bookings - Weather permitted by enquiry only
- Outdoor bath experiences - If you are staying in the Tryphena Area would like to experience the night sky soaking in our outdoor bath tubs. Complimentary Natural bath bombs and chocolate included. Details to follow. Send us an enquiry.
See you next season.
Pete, Lucy and Panzer

Tryphena House hidden in the our Frangipani tree.
Our frangipani is still flowering and so are our neighbours hibiscus'. We love our temperate climate. We've also harvested our first 4 bunches of bananas this week. Watch out for up and coming banana updates from Tryphena House. 🌿🌼
It's chilling down and bath time is heating up... You may have missed the last bit of summer feeling weather for a holiday due to lockdown... But there are still reasons to visit us late winter and into spring. One being these baths, two being our #darkskysanctuary and three being there's definitely no rule to say you can't kick back and enjoy @islandgin through out the whole year! 🌿🌌

We haven't seen this view for while. Lock down restrictions mean we can't go over the hill unless we have an essential reason. We miss Medlands and all the East Coast beaches on #greatbarrierisland And can't wait to reunite as much as so many of our visitors.
Good things come to those who wait... 🙌🙌🙌 #nzmustdo #lockdown
Great Barrier Island... Stunning, empty and isolated beaches, this one is just 2km along the coast road from our accommodation.
Bring on warmer days and much needed travel after all this blows over. We can't wait. #greatbarrierisland
Papatūānuku (our earth mother) is Breathing
Sit at a distance, stand as one.
When the time is right, we welcome you.
But for now, listen.
We love this from Visit Auckland. Spot GBI - our beaches still look as empty as they are throughout most of the year. How lucky we are to live in empty paradise.
We have had offers from previous guests about booking their trips upfront to help us out (and maybe so they can get excited about being able to travel again!!!). We are so grateful for these offers, would like everyone to know we are hanging in their, looking forward to welcoming anyone who would like to stay with us back, when the time is right.
Enjoying our space, the views and this beautiful place we are so grateful to be in right now.
Pete partially agrees, we all know it would be better if he could go fishing...
Sit at a distance, stand as one. When the time is right, we welcome you. But for now, listen. Papatūānuku (our earth mother) is breathing. ------------------...

Whilst we have no guests at the moment and we are finding this hard- we have our outdoor bathtubs all to ourselves. What a treat.
Tonight, we'll be kicking back in the tubs with some wine, chocolate and the night sky, on the look out for Venus & Pleiades.
On your next trip to stay with us, we highly recommend booking in with Good Heavens and let the experts guide you through our incredible dark skies...🌌🌿
earthsky.org Watch for the close pairing of the brightest planet, Venus, with the little dipper-shaped Pleiades star cluster. Their conjunction is April 3, but any evening around then will be lovely!
What are you growing? We love sharing fresh veg from our veggy gardens with guests. We'll be spending this down time improving our veggy garden, gathering seaweed and prepping the soil. 🌿💧💡There's no time like the present to start growing your own produce... Herbs are a great place to start. We use huge amounts of dill, parsley, coriander and basil.

Emergency Management Teams message: Keep COVID-19 over there.
For all of you who know us, we are Pete & Lucy, we own and run this pretty young tourism business (not great timing). Whilst Great Barrier Island pulls together to protect the community, particularly the vulnerable, all we can do at this present time is feel so incredibly lucky to have both made the choice to move here. The foreseeable future looks a little tougher than expected as we discourage visitors to the island. We are honouring existing bookings but checking people's recent movements and making sensible decisions, plus allowing people to postpone or cancel their trips. We are looking forward to welcoming visitors back to share our spot when the time is right and we can't wait to see you all again #greatbarrierisland 🙌🙌🙌
KEEP CALM & PADDLE ON.
Today: For anyone who would like to get some fresh air today I will be here all day and you are welcome to take out our kayaks/paddleboards into Puriri Bay. Anyone who was doing the beach clean- please scour the coast and collect an rubbish you may find, leave with us and I will drop at the trailer Taryn has organised.
In the coming weeks: Any locals would like some fresh air/to do something fun, please know you can come and use our water equipment. We just ask you call ahead so we can check weather/that we are here and organise.
Lucy & Pete
To anyone who has stayed with us this season, we would love it if you clicked on the link and answer some questions about your trip to the Barrier. Takes 5 minutes.
You no doubt loved your trip to the island, so we'd loved to hear about what you loved but also if there were any barriers that made your trip harder to book, plan or do certain things whilst you were here.
The idea is to collect as many responses to help us to improve visitor experience.
If you're reading this and you're a local- great. You can click here and complete the local survey www.localsurvey.co.nz . We want to hear from you too...
visitorsurvey.co.nz As a recent visitor to Aotea / Great Barrier Island, we invite you to participate in research designed to improve the visitor experience as well as support us to make good decisions for tourism on Aotea / Great Barrier Island.
Here's a sneak peak of the Gray's Homestead museum in Claris-to see more you can check it out on your next trip to the Barrier. Search for Puriri Bay Road, Tryphena, you'll find us right at the end on the water protected by bird rock islet and the reef. #greatbarrierisland
