Day 27 Whananaki to Ngunguru - 29km

Tent was wet again in the morning. Hung the flysheet out to dry while having breakfast, but by 9am i needed to move on. Almost 30km today, there is a detour from Matapouri Road.

Warm and sunny for most of the day, too. Walked the longest footbridge and then around the foreshore of the Whananaki estuary. There was a trail starting at a rather lovely beach, but i met an old geezer with his dog (who loved “the ladies” - still not entirely convinced the old man was only talking about his dog there), he wouldn’t stop talking but did recommend the low tide route of the coastal walkway to me. A good recommendation, as it was a nice beach, and i got to see the monument for a boat that sank there in 1975, with spectacular views. From the monument went a track to join the original walkway. Nice.

The rest of the walkway was gravel 4WD road, and wound through the hills and valleys towards Matapouri with some more great views.
Then the detour began, with a tarseal road climbing up and up for about 4km, then a turnoff to another, longer, tarseal road. To be honest the two most exciting things that happened was a) lunch, were i could also dry out my tent, and b) a motorcross race, of which i saw a paddock full with parked cars and bikes in the distance. I could hear them though!

Then a turnoff and about 5km further down using a cycle path i rejoined with the original TA trail line. From there it was another 4km walk into Ngunguru. Christoph was 1km behind me so i waited at the shops. The following sections include some estuary and river crossings only to be done at low tide. There is a camp at the top of that part, which includes a boat ride over the Ngunguru river, and we decided to stay there and go on the boat ride at the same time.

We had actually both met the friendly camp owners during the day, they saw me sitting on a bench in Ngunguru and stopped to ask if i was me and said they were just on their way home and had met Christoph in Matapouri! Too funny.
It’s really quite interesting how TA supporters just stop for a chat with walkers anytime. Earlier i had met one of the Northland TA board members, she was driving past on the gravel road and just stopped beside me. I told her about the Waikare river track, maybe it helps.
But the camp owner of course also stopped to organise things.

The boat ride was fun and the camp is just gorgeous. Nikau bay eco camp. For lovers of the great outdoors. Amazing showers without roof, big kitchen / lounge, open to the outside, some bunk rooms, some twin and double rooms, space for tents. They grow veggies and herbs and share freely.

And they know about the upcoming river crossings! There is a big chart and the owner talked us through it.
They let us stay in a cabin because the weather started turning bad. Very grateful! Another group of people showed up, with them a walker who was just on her way to Cape Reinga to start her journey :-)

Standing tonight with the incredibly talented people who power, stage and light the music events that are such an important part of our cultural life in Aotearoa, lighting everything including the SkyTower a brilliant shade of red. #WeMakeEventsNZ is now at #RedAlert to raise awareness of the thousands of highly skilled industry professionals, all of whom have had little or no work since March with little likelihood of restarting soon.
