[09/13/20] Kitchen open for lunch and Dinner all welcome to come on down for a meal.
Sunday's comp saw a decent turnout considering the Dirty Dozen were away on their annual pilgrimage. Weather was decidedly Spring like and teams took advantage to pick up some excellent prizes. Many thanks to the major sponsor, Mike White Bedpost - Hawkes Bay.
Bernie Mcahill dressed to impressed and was duly rewarded. Might be a weekend at Bernie's????!!!
Other notably prize winner as per the attached photos. I think Kat Belcher won one for being Kat......excellent photo and congrats to everyone!
No, Don didn't win the new corer as a prize in the comp, that's him with his new toy, a corer which will see the greens improve even more than they have already.
It's been an amazing transformation over the last 20 years or so. Who remembers when we had sheep on the course as lawn mowers? Or the boys going round the greens with a push lawn mower?! Each year seems to bring an improvement in equipment which all adds to the process. Shows what can be done with dedicated volunteers and teamwork. Hats off to the current crew and all those who preceded them to make such an amazing little course. Long may it continue.
Dear members ,

Rock up at 11.30 prize for the best dressed , teams drawn at 11.45 tee off as directed by the starter at 12.0 noon.
“Its Jacks or Better “, teams of three or four, deal the cards after the team has teed off, hit it long and hard, you must take the drive of the person who draws the ace , and at the teams discretion play your joker twice during 18 holes to negate the Ace drive.
The course is in pristine condition thanks to a dedicated ravel of volunteers, Great Barrier Island Golf Course, if only others knew how spoiled we are.
Golf Etiquette: Flatulence should be kept to a minimum unless it is distracting the opposition.
Loud shouting unless it’s a hole in one is not required, and drunkenness while playing could have your removed from the course.
Nearest the pin on 2 and 17, longest putt in the hole from on the green on 18.
See you there for a fun day of Golf and comradery,
Visitors and non-members always welcome of course but in this instance cannot play in members only competitions without the express permission of the match committee.
GBI Golf Club
Many thanks to all those who applied for the position of caterer at GBI Golf Club. This is to let you all know that the position has now been filled.
To our members, as you all will be aware we will be remaining at Covid-19 level 3 until 26th August. As a result of this our planned tournaments are postponed.
As we said before under level 3 you are able to play golf with the members of your immediate bubble, so please make use of the opportunity to get out on the fairways.
We would ask you to do the following:
1) Stay home if you are feeling unwell
2) Sign in at the club rooms, there is a book under the verandah for this purpose.
3) The cups in the holes have been inverted so you do not need to remove the pins.

Yesterdays Flags tournament was won by Chris Nola, he managed to get to his drive on the 19th hole which was further than all the others in the field so congratulations to Chris. Possibly a breakthrough tournament win???
Nobody managed to get onto the green on number 2 so no nearest the pin winners. That's 2 tournaments in a row......the greens aren't that small are they??? Come on people, sharpen up!
Phil Yates was the only other winner on the day sinking the longest putt on the 18th. Many thanks to Bird Wines for their support of today's tournament.
Next Sunday will be sponsored by Bedpost. More details to follow

It is with much sadness Great Barrier Island Golf club reports the loss of our Club President, long term member and long time course volunteer Ken Henry who left us suddenly early on Monday morning.
The club and members extend our deepest condolences to Di and all of Ken's family at this very sad time.
We all will have so many special memories from the years gone by - both on the course and in the clubrooms.
We recently got to have our annual Mexican Night which Ken and Di have organized for a number of years. And of course the man himself signed of as a winner of his last tournament on Sunday. Reigning champion, take that, never to be beaten again.
Many thanks to the medical staff who attended to him, also special thank you to our local police, Roger and Kylie, who brought Ken to the golf club for a final drive on the course before he was taken to Auckland on the police maritime boat, Deodar.
Information we have is that Ken's service will be held at Purewa, All Saints Chapel. 10am Sat. 25th July, 100 St Johns Road Auckland. After service to be held at Herne Bay Rackets Club 10-12 Westend Rd Herne Bay.
RIP big fella :- "Shine on you crazy diamond"
Prepare for an explosion! 🤣

Just like to give a shout out to new sponsors who have come on board.
Steve Bird Wines have donated some of their selection of fine wine to us for prizes in upcoming tournaments. As many of us are partial to a glass or 6 of the wonderful stuff I'm sure this will get members quite excited and I imagine turnout at tournaments is likely to rise substantially....get your A game on!!
Check out their products here at their website.
The first Stonewall Store sponsored Chicken run was a great success yesterday on a stunning Great Barrier Island mid winter day. Blue skies, light winds and sunshine. Spectacular views of Hirakimata and the ranges! 22 players turned out for golf in the gulf at it's finest on our magical little course in paradise.
A huge thank you to Jos Bellerby and her amazing staff at the store. A great place to get all your shopping - and they have an off licence too, so all your needs in one place. There's also The Outpost gift store and the cafe in the same complex. Saturday markets run later in the year, always a great place to go and shop, have a coffee, browse the gift shop and catch up with people.
Jos supplied the voucher prizes for chickens to be picked up from the store. Congratulations to everyone who picked up a prize. Again, many thanks to this local business supporting our golf tournament.
WINNERS AND GRINNERS
Nearest to the middle of the fairway was Sam Boyd. Nearest to the pin on the 17th was Andy Stohr. Longest putt on the 18th was Richard Wood. Nobody managed to land on the green on number 2.
Overall stableford winner on the day was Tom Hunsdale with 42. Runner up Mitch Brown had 40 points.
Cheers Jos and Stonewall Store for helping us put on a very memorable day!
In our post a couple of days ago we talked about how young Mitch Brown was chosen for a National award by NZ Golf and he was waiting for his trophy. Well the trophy arrived and it is beautiful! Congratulations Mitch. Well deserved award! Making the club and the island proud!
Wonderful to be at golf yesterday, little bit of rain, little bit of sun and a delicious rainbow at the end!
So nice to see Andy looking so well and in good spirits. Yaaay
And.....Look at that view!
No one told us life was gonna be this way 🤦🏻♂️

Sunday 5th July 2020. 3 Club Challenge Tournament.
We had an excellent turnout for the 3 club challenge tournament. Conditions overcast and a strong northerly wind made it testing golf with the wind coming from a different direction to normal. A variety of club choices were in evidence, drivers, 5 irons, hybrids, you name it!
We had lots of scores in the 20s and low 30s but 2 players tied on 34 stableford points. Not a bad effort considering 11 clubs were missing out of the bag.
It came down to a countback to decide the winner. Both players had exactly the same score on the back 9 so the tie came down to the last 6 holes. Eventual winner was Richard Wood, and the unlucky runner up was Noel Nancekivell. Pity about the 18th hole Noel!! Well played everyone and congratulations to Richard on his win.
Keep an eye out here for info on the next tournament.
Since when was toilet breaks a competition 🧐
We've all been there.....

A fine and sunny day (with a couple of showers) saw 5 teams turn out for the inaugural "Jacks or Better" ambrose tournament. This tournament was sponsored by award winning Squawking Magpie wines from the Gimblett Gravels vineyards in the Hawkes Bay.
Many thanks to the sponsors for providing an entertaining format which saw players in the team have to draw a card to determine which of the players' tee shots to take. Each team had 2 Jokers in reserve to be used at a strategic moment decided by the members of the team. Some luck, some skill, some tough decision making, but a huge amount of fun going by the reactions of the participants!
Congratulations to everyone taking part. The winning team of May Cameron, Maxine Goloboski and Dave Allison took away an award winning bottle of fine wine each.
Runners up on the day were Kat Belcher, Marge Harris and Tom Hunsdale.
An added bonus was seeing Gibbo at the club and making as much noise as ever! Mr Colin Phillips was also present so we had a range of members stretching back to the eighties. Great to see and long may it continue!
