Mental Health Awareness Week. @mhfnz Five Ways to Wellbeing #3 'KEEP LEARNING' 🤓
⁣
Research shows learning, remaining curious and setting goals leads to improvements in self-esteem, social interaction and a more active and involved life. It can even lower the chance of depression.
⁣
Ideas:
⁣
💫 Allocate 1 hour each week to try something new
💫 Read a book
💫 Take an online course
💫 Set goals every Sunday
💫 Learn a few phrases from a new language
💫 Take up a new hobby
⁣
When was the last time you learned?

Mental Health Awareness Week. @mhfnz Five Ways to Wellbeing ~ #2 'BE ACTIVE'.
⁣
Research shows a strong correlation between physical activity and increased wellbeing, as well as lower rates of depression and anxiety.
⁣
It is now viewed as essential for people of all ages and has even been shown to slow age-related cognitive decline.
⁣
Try to move for at least 30 mins a day, 5 x a week 🏃‍♂️ And get creative, it doesn’t have to be going to the gym!
⁣
Ideas:
⚡️ Walking meetings
⚡️ Try a new online exercise class
⚡️ Get moving out in nature
⚡️ Friend/colleague fun sports comp
⚡️ Park your car further away from work each day this week and walk 15 mins each way
⚡️Turn on your favourite playlist and dance for 10 mins
⚡️ Try yoga when you feel stressed one evening, instead of wine or social media scrolling
⁣
What will you do to move today? 💃

20/09/2020

This week in NZ it's Mental Health Awareness Week. It's been a strange and challenging year for most Kiwi's (and most of the world!) and we need to support our mental health and wellbeing like never before ❤️
⁣
@mhfnz have created 'The Five Ways to Wellbeing' as a result of a review (via NEF) of the most up-to-date evidence and found that building the following five actions into our day to day lives is really important for the wellbeing of individuals, families, communities and organisations to thrive.
⁣
Five Ways to Wellbeing:
⁣
1. Give
⁣
2. Be Active
⁣
3. Keep Learning
⁣
4. Connect
⁣
5. Take Notice
⁣
You can introduce any of these actions into your life, any time, and you will begin to feel the benefits 🌈
⁣
Each day this week, I'll be giving you simple, quick, practical ideas to activate each of the Five Ways to Wellbeing. Today, we'll start with Five Ways to Wellbeing #1 'GIVE'.
⁣
Giving is more than just the sharing of material things with others. It is about cultivating a spirit of generosity and promoting active participation in social and community life.
⁣
Seeing yourself, and your happiness, linked to the wider community can be incredibly rewarding and creates connection with the people around you. It feels good to give and everybody has something to offer.
⁣
Ideas:
💓 Shouting a colleague a coffee or helping them with their work
💓 Paying someone a compliment
💓Volunteer your time to charity or a friend/family member in need
💓 Smile at a stranger
💓 Donate old toys, books, sports equipment, clothes etc to a local charity.
💓 While in traffic, let a car in (with a smile!)
💓 Really engage in conversation and eye contact with your local check out operator/service station attendant/courier driver
💓 Make a donation to a charity you believe in
💓 Write a letter to someone telling them how much they mean to you
⁣
Which one will you do this week?👇

The gut-mind connection...
⁣
What does our gut health have to do with our mental and brain health? It turns out a lot more than we might expect 🧠
⁣
The gut and brain have a steady ability to communicate via the nervous system, hormones, and the immune system. And some of the microbiome can release neurotransmitters, just like our own neurons do, speaking to the brain in its own language via the vagus nerve.
⁣
I mentioned a few weeks ago there have been many reasons I haven't been active on social in the last few weeks. Lockdown 2.0 was one reason and another is that I've been battling candida in my gut 😣 Candida in your gut is a yeast overgrowth that can affect the way your body absorbs nutrients and the inflammation caused by candida inhibits the ability of the neurons to transmit information.
⁣
Symptoms are different for everyone, but my symptoms (which have made me feel far from myself and have even affected my ability to work) included:
-Low mood (it can also present as anxiety)
-Crazy sugar cravings (I don't usually have a sweet tooth and found myself raiding the cupboard for something sweet then eating ice cream at 10am one day!, sugar feeds the candida hence the cravings)
-Brain fog
-Fatigue
-Bloating
⁣
If you have one or more of these symptoms be sure to check in with a qualified functional medical practitioner who speciailises in gut health. If you're in Auckland, ping me a message and I can recommend a few.
⁣
Treatment is relatively straight forward and usually includes supplements (including a probiotic to rebuild the balance of good bacteria in the gut and a form of castor oil capsule which kills off the bad bacteria)
and a special sugar free diet. Within a few weeks you should be feeling good as new 🥰
⁣
Have you ever had candida or another gut issue which affected your brain or mental health?

Lockdown 2.0 Lifesavers....
⁣
I’ve been reflecting on the last few weeks and the daily habits and rituals that have really made a hugely positive impact on my physiology and mental wellbeing.
⁣
And lockdown or not, these practices can help us all find presence, peace and space amongst our busy lives:
⁣
❤️ Random acts of kindness - so great to take the focus off yourself and make someone's day with a small gesture
📱 Deleting facebook + messenger off my phone - so much info, news updates and negativity out there, it really started to overwhelm me
💃 Dancing - immediate mood booster for the whole family!
🌲 Getting out in nature, rain or shine...(and there was a lotta rain!) - perfect for helping with cabin fever
🧘‍♀️ Yoga - such a beautiful nourishing practice that soothes the nervous system
🎵 Uplifting music - it can change your mood almost immediately
🙏 Daily meditations - yoga nidras have been my favourite (so many great ones, just google on youtube)
✍️ Gratitude journal - so easy to focus on what we are lacking in times like these, gratitude reminds me to count my many blessings
⁣
For those in lockdown in AKL or around the world, what rituals helped you get through?👇

I've been MIA on here over Auckland's Lockdown 2.0 (almost 3 weeks now).
⁣
But I wanted to say I've been thinking of you all (Aucklanders, Victorians and anyone else in lockdown around the world) and hope you are getting through as best you can ❤️
⁣
I promised myself I'd never post just because I felt I had to....and there are so many reasons which have meant I haven't felt able to be on social for the last few weeks (which I'll share with you soon) but the most important one is in this picture 👧
⁣
I learnt a lot from Lockdown 1.0. Obviously with kindys shut we had our daughter home full time (4-year-olds do not entertain themselves ya know....not even for 10 mins apparently!), yet both of us were incredibly busy with work. We got through by basically doing shift work from the early hours until late at night. And whilst there were some fun times it was quite frankly, pretty stressful, rushed and pressured 🙈
⁣
I decided this time I would learn my lesson and push pause on all absolutely non-essential work, so I could be more present for Ava and my husband. And boy what a difference it's made. I feel very lucky to be in a position where I'm self employed and can pick and choose my work projects and hours. I absolutely empathise with families out there trying to keep up with their day job whilst being with little babies/kids or running homeschooling😢 WFH with kids is simply not possible without some pretty intense emotional and mental costs (for all parties) in my opinion!
⁣
I can’t wait to get back to work again. I have missed it. But for now, it's been puzzles, reading, nature walks and baking (and a fairly big dose of cabin fever!)...which isnt that bad in the scheme of things 🧩 🌲 🌊 🧁 📚
⁣
That said, there's still been some big, uncomfortable, unwanted emotions and challenges along the way...sending love if you have had or are having a hard time. Lockdowns are not easy for anyone x

It’s not going for a massage once a month or going on holiday once a year that makes the biggest difference to our stress levels - it’s what we do little and often.
.
Try incorporating ‘Mindful Minutes’ into your day every 90 minutes. Put down your phone and just bring yourself fully into the present moment, using your senses. Some ideas:
✨ a mindful cup of tea
✨ 10 x deep breaths
✨ watch your thoughts
✨ mindful eating
✨ step outside and scan your senses
✨ walk around the block
.
These mini breaks for our brain recalibrate and reset us and stop us from tipping into information overload and busy-ness overwhelm!
.
Set little alarms on your phone to get you started and soon it’ll come naturally.
.
It’s amazing when we stop to think about it, how little we ever give ourselves this space. Research shows short, quality breaks actually reenergise our mental energy, so we’ll be more productive 💫
.
Do you take little pauses throughout the day? It feels like a luxury but it will make us more efficient, calmer and happier in the big picture 🙏🏻
