Coverage of the night sky event at Claris Sports Club last month
radionz.co.nz Great Barrier Island has become the world's third International Dark Sky Sanctuary, in recognition of its outstanding star-filled night skies.
I have been getting a lot of queries about when we will reopen so I thought I would post this to let those that are interested know what is happening.
I am in residence on the island, currently doing a number of pre summer jobs but will do air fills and have bait and fishing gear available - you can take pot luck and drop in or give me a call on 740.
Not planning on starting the coffee machine and pie warmer up until mid October at this stage. I am in the process of restructuring my business and when the shop opens properly it will be re-branded as Scoff and Tackle.
Hooked On Barrier will be only related to the charter side of my business concentrating on sightseeing charters.

Aotea / Great Barrier Local Board
All are welcome to join us as we celebrate the official launch of Aotea Great Barrier Island Dark Sky Sanctuary. Saturday, 19 August from 2.30pm
Aotea / Great Barrier Local Board
BREAKING NEWS!
After a lot of hard work, and an at-times-grueling application process, Aotea Great Barrier Island has been awarded International Dark Sky Sanctuary status by the International Dark-Sky Association. There are only two other sanctuaries in the world and ours is the first island. This is a great achievement, one that enables us to protect our night sky for future generations.
Thanks to the Somerville-Ryans for spearheading the project and Mark Russell for his wonderful images
More details to come (including a celebration event in August)
