Rođendan košarkaškog velikana: BRANKO RADOVIĆ (05.12.1933. - 18.11.1993.)

Basketball giant's birthday: BRANKO RADOVIC (December 5, 1933 - November 18, 1993)

Krešimir Ćosić (1948-1995): "People in basketball usually assume that short guys are the ''smart-ones'' who think and that tall guys are the ''dumb-ones'' who run and jump; I explain to them that from my view from up I have a much better look at the game than anyone. ''

Rođendan najvećeg istarskog sportaša svih vremena: MATE PARLOV (16.11.1948. - 29.07.2008.)
Birthday of the greatest Istrian athlete of all time: MATE PARLOV (November 16, 1948 - July 29, 2008)

Mate Parlov (16.11.1948. - 29.07.2008.). R.I.P. Istrauni Basketball

On this day, exactly 71 years ago (on November 16, 1948) was born in Split (Croatia) one of the greatest athletes of Pula, Istria, Croatia and Europe of all time, the legendary boxer from Pula (Istria, Croatia) Mate Parlov. Mate was the best Croatian boxer of all time, and by the votes of the Croatian sports journalists in 1996 was elected the best Croatian sportsman of the 20th century.
In the amateur career, in his light heavyweight category, he disputed a total of 310 fights with only 13 losses. 8 times in a row was the champion of the former Yugoslavia (1967-1974) and 5 times in a row champion of the Balkans (1971-1974). 2 times in a row he won titles of European amateur champion: in Madrid 1971 and in Belgrade 1973. Parlov retired from his amateur career with an absolute domination (5 years without defeat!) and the title of World amateur champion from Havana in 1974. The crown of his amateur career was definitely the Olympic gold medal at the Olympics in Munich in 1972!
In his professional career he had 29 fights: 24 wins, 3 losses and 2 draws. European title in the light heavyweight category he won in 1976 and the become World champion in the light heavyweight category (by WBC) on 01 July 1978, after the victory over the Argentine boxer Miguel Angel Cuello by KO in the 9th round. From professional boxing he retired in 1980 and on the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 1984 was the coach of the boxing team of Yugoslavia (Yugoslav boxers achieve their best results ever in Olympics 1984: one gold, one silver and two bronze), which was his last involvement in the sport.
In addition to all these sporting achievements, medals and titles it is impossible to describe its cultural significance for the sport of Pula, our Istrian region and our country. In 1970’s in Istria and the whole former Yugoslavia ruled for Mate an incredible media fever, especially when he returned to Pula from the major competitions ornate with the gold medal. As a man, he was incredibly nice and very humble, which adds a human dimension and an aureole of forgetfulness to his sports greatness. In his honor, the largest hall in Pula named Sport’s home "Mate Parlov". He is the greatest champion ever grown in this part of the world! Mate Parlov passed away in Pula on July 29, 2008. Not to be forgotten!

Rođendan košarkaškog velikana: prof. ALEKSANDAR NIKOLIĆ (28.10.1924. - 28.10.2019.)

Basketball giant's birthday: prof. ALEKSANDAR NIKOLIC (October 28, 1924 - October 28, 2019)

- 12.03.2000.), utemeljitelj moderne jugoslavenske i europske košarke. Istrauni Basketball

On this day, exactly 95 years ago was born in Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina) prof. Aleksandar Nikolic (October 28, 1924 - March 12, 2000), the founder of modern Yugoslav and European basketball. Nikolic twice from 1953-1965 and 1976-1978 coached the Yugoslav national team and with the same one won 1 World gold (Manila 1978) and silver medal (Rio 1963) and 1 European gold (Liege 1977), 2 silver (Belgrade 1961, Moscow 1965) and 1 bronze medal (Wroclaw 1963). At club level he won as a coach all there was to win: 3 Euroleagues (European Champions’ Cup) with Ignis Varese (1970, 1972, 1973), 1 Cup Winners' Cup with Crvena Zvezda Beograd (1974), 3 Italian league titles (1970, 1972, 1973), 3 Italian Cups (1970, 1971, 1973) and with OKK Beograd one championship of Yugoslavia (1963) and one Yugoslav cup (1962). By his individual achievements was twice voted European coach of the year (1966, 1976), in 2008 named one of the 50 most contributors in the history of the Euroleague, since 1998 is a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, and posthumously from 2007 is also a member of FIBA's Hall of Fame in Alcobendas. Although today's generation of our young players almost do not remember him, Nikolic's basketball legacy is beyond description. Him above all to thank for development (before him there was only enthusiasm; prof. Nikolic picked up basketball at the level of science), system (Yugoslav basketball school was the best hierarchically organized system of basketball outside the USA) and the popularization of basketball in the territory of all states from the former Yugoslavia, winning the Olympic, World and European titles, making coaches like Zeravica, Novosel, Tanjevic, Ivkovic, Maljkovic and Obradovic and players like Korac, Daneu, Cosic, Dalipagić, Kicanovic, Slavnic, Delibasic, Petrovic, Kukoc, Radja, Divac, Djordjevic and others. Had it not been for him, we would not have in this region know how basketball truly magical sport is. Summers he usually spent in Istria and, during the party of ‘’preferans’’, encyclopedic spread basketball knowledge. Thanks him to love for basketball that we all have to be inherited. Prof. Aleksandar Nikolic died in Belgrade (Serbia) on March 12, 2000. Istrauni Basketball

- 06.10.2019.)!

A dash from history of the ex-Yugoslavian basketball: 46 years since the first European gold in Barcelona (October 6, 1973 - October 6, 2019)!

Istrauni Basketball

Finale Europskog prvenstva u košarci (Eurobasket final game): JUGOSLAVIJA - Španjolska 78:67 (43:31), Palacio de los Deportes, Barcelona, 06.10.1973.

JUGOSLAVIJA - YUGOSLAVIA (78): Tvrdić 6, Kićanović, Jelovac 8, Knežević, Jerkov, Ivković, Slavnić 12, Ćosić 23, Šolman 7, Plećaš 8, Dalipagić 9, Marović 5.

ŠPANJOLSKA - SPAIN (67): Brabender 22, Ramos 5, Cabrera 8, Margar, Santillana 6, Rulan 2, Buscato 10, Flores, Sagi Vela 4, Luik 10, Estrada.

On this day, exactly 46 years ago (October 6, 1973) the former Yugoslavia won her first European gold medal in basketball, defeating in Eurobasket final in Barcelona the host Spain 78:67 (43:31)! Yugoslavia was at that European Championship, after 4 silver and 1 bronze in the decade from 1961 to 1971, finally emerged from the shadow of the Soviet Union and introduced a new great generation (first time for the national team played Slavnic, Kicanovic and Dalipagic) led by outstanding young coach Mirko Novosel. Yugoslav masters dominated parquet entire final game, especially in the mood were Kresimir Cosic and Zoran Slavnic. For ‘’golden’’ championship team played that time even 6 Croatian players: Ćosić, Jelovac, Tvrdić, Jerkov, Šolman i Plećaš. It was the first European title from the three consecutive (1973, 1975, 1977) in series of brightest generation of Yugoslav basketball ever! Not to be forgotten… Istrauni Basketball
