🩺How to suspect pneumonia in the elderly

If your loved one is sick, the signs of pneumonia include:

✔Cough. Look out for a cough that does not clear up. Some types of pneumonia lead to mucus build-up in the lungs. This can cause one to cough up a greenish, white, yellow or even bloody substance.

✔Fever (or low body temperature). Most people with pneumonia will have a fever. However, it is not unusual for people over 65 and a weak immune system to have a cooler body temperature instead of a fever.

✔Chest pain. The infection in the lungs can cause pain when breathing or coughing. This can feel like a sharp stabbing pain in the chest with deep breathing or coughing.

✔Fatigue. Fighting off an infection saps the body of energy. Your loved one may feel exhausted and depleted.

✔Confusion. Exhaustion and infection can lead to temporary confusion and slips in mental awareness. This is often seen in the elderly.

✔Shortness of breath. The air sacs in the lungs can fill with fluid or pus. This causes a cough but also difficulty breathing. You will especially notice this when your loved one needs to move quickly. For example, trying to rush to answer the phone or climbing stairs.

Consult your doctor right away if you suspect pneumonia!

[12/08/20]   How often should you change the diaper of a bed limited patient?

Studies have shown that most people with incontinence need to change their adult diaper between 5-8 times a day. In addition, it is extremely important that patients with bowel incontinence change their diaper (or the caregiver does), immediately when it becomes soiled.

What type of Dementia are you dealing with?

Diseases that cause dementia

These conditions are the leading causes of dementia. Many patients have mixed dementia, a combination of two or more types, such as Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia.

Alzheimer’s disease.

Alzheimer’s is characterized by amyloid plaques and tangled fibers in the brain and by a loss of connections between nerve cells. Damage initially appears in the hippocampus, an area of the brain involved in memory formation, and gradually spreads.

Vascular dementia.

The second most common type of dementia is caused from damage to the vessels that supply blood to the brain. It tends to affect focus, organization, problem-solving and speed of thinking more noticeably than memory. These can occur after a stroke.

Lewy body dementia.

Abnormal protein deposits in the brain, called Lewy bodies, affect brain chemistry and lead to problems with behavior, mood, movement and thinking.

Frontotemporal disorders.

Degenerative damage to the brain’s frontal and temporal lobes is the most common cause of dementia in people age 65 and younger. Symptoms might include apathy; difficulty communicating, walking or working; emotional changes; and impulsive or inappropriate behaviors.

Patients with Dementia will need full time care.

A person with dementia will need more care and support as their condition progresses, and there may come a time when they will need to move into full-time or nursing home care. This could be because a care home may be able to meet the needs of the person better.
