Here at MedAct and DocsNotCops we believe everyone should have access to healthcare and are mobilising together to ensure care for the most vulnerable in our society. This is part of a larger struggle against and government’s hostile environment policy. Whether you are a healthcare or social worker, a teacher, or anyone who believes that as a community we are responsible for ensuring everyone is welcome and included – join our public meeting on 19thMarch from 6.15pm at the Friends Meeting House! We will think how together we can resist the hostile environment, fight for healthcare for all and support each other in our struggles, as organised groups and as individuals in our community
Recommending 'witches warriors and workers' anthology by Jane Burn and Fran Lock, and feisty Brighton Poet Pauline Seawards is in there too :)

Hello - shop looks great, but where is it? Can't find the address!! 😀
What is your address please? And opening hours?
Any update on when the bookshop will be opening?
Hi there, I just wanted to recommend this incredible women's magazine as something you might stock in the shop and at pop-ups ... and as a place that might want to run an article about you! :D
This is such a brilliant idea:)

The Feminist Bookshop is an independent bookshop and plant based cafe. * Come find us Thursday to Saturday at 48 Upper North Street, Brighton, BN1 3FH.

Our mission is to support and promote feminist writers, creatives and entrepreneurs. We want the bookshop to increase awareness of alternative narratives and experiences and to provide a safe, fun, open space for dialogue, discussion and debate.

Operating as usual

HAPPY NEW YEAR 🥳
from all of us at The Feminist Bookshop
*
We hope you are all safe and well ☺️
How is everyone feeling? Hope you’re doing ok.
*
And for anyone who might be feeling a little blue, here are some fabulous books to kickstart the year.
*
While the shop looks set to be closed for a while longer, from tomorrow we’ll be open for click and collect (see website for collection times) and on weekends are serving takeaway coffees from 11-4. So if you’re passing by do come grab a cuppa ☕️
*
Sending lots of love 💙💙💙

We are so excited announce a series of limited edition prints for sale by Brighton illustrator Sarah J Holland.
*
Her gorgeous illustration brilliantly captures the warmth of The Feminist Bookshop and we are so proud to have this on our walls.
*
There are just 25 large prints and 75 small, each numbered and signed by Sarah. The perfect gift for this festive season and all the sale proceeds go to Sarah's chosen charity. Just head to our website to get yours!
*
Sarah shared with us why she wanted to work with the bookshop to raise funds for @national_migraine_centre
*
"I am so proud to partner with @thefeministbookshop in Brighton.
*
It's a cause that's so close to my heart. Not only is this independent bookshop an essential and beautiful space, but all of the proceeds will go to @national_migraine_centre
*
2020 was crazy enough, but this year I was disabled by debilitating daily migraines which led to 4 months off work. I am still recovering. I had never had an attack before, and suddenly my existence was floored by them. I had no idea how terrifying and intense they could be.
*
Migraine is an invisible disability and complex neurological condition which is so common yet so misunderstood, and it can be incredibly isolating.
*
The NHS is amazing but due to the systems in place, I didn't get the specialist help I so badly needed.
*
The stellar work that @national_migraine_centre does in helping migraineurs feel listened to and supported by a qualified neurologist is totally essential.
*
It's a tough time for charities and the National Migraine Centre has had a dip in donations lately, and it's only a small organisation, so they need all the support they can get. All these limited edition prints are signed by the artist and are printed on high quality recycled paper. They start at just £7.50, and are available in small and large, framed and unframed."

NEW OPENING HOURS
*
Hello everyone, we hope you’re all doing well. We are really excited to be opening again this week starting from Thursday 3rd December.
*
Given the current situation for now the CAFE WILL REMAIN CLOSED so no food or drinks will be available at the shop. We’ll keep the policy under review and let you know if anything changes.
*
We also ask that you only come to the shop with people in your household and that no more than 6 people come into the shop to browse at a time.
*
If you would like your books to be wrapped we recommend ordering online to click and collect as those orders will be wrapped up for you 😁
*
Thank you so much for all your patience and understanding. We can’t wait to see all your lovely faces again.
*
Sending lots of love 💙💙💙

AFLO. the poet

Content note - no graphic mentions but this poem is a story of surviving sexual abuse.

Such a moving post from the incredible AFLO. the poet speaking up for survivors today on the 30th anniversary of Survivor's Network and the first day of the 16 days of activism against gender based violence.

Thank you so much for this AFLO. and thank you to Survivors' Network for all the work you do 💕

Do check out both their pages where you can also find out how you can support them ###

Content note - no graphic mentions but this poem is a story of surviving sexual abuse.

I am standing up today to say “I believe survivors”. We live in a society that routinely undermines, disbelieves and
disregards survivor experiences, where all too often people are not supported when they speak up.

I want to join @survivorsnetwork , the Rape Crisis Centre for Sussex, in saying “I believe you, and I believe in you". You
don’t have to face this journey alone, there are so many of us who love you and are ready to help.

Today is Survivors’ Network’s 30th anniversary – that's thirty years of working with survivors, and hearing from survivors
about how important being believed is for their healing journey.

Will you join me? All you need to do is share a post of their 'I believe in you' image (which I'll add to my story), or share a photo of yourself holding a sign that says “I believe in you”,
and tag @survivorsnetwork. You can also donate to their birthday appeal via the link on their IG page!

POEM OF THE DAY
*
Evening everyone, tonight we’d like to share a poem from the fabulous, Pulitzer Prize winning #gwendolynbrooks
*
Born in 1917, Brooks was an American poet, author and teacher. She won the Pulitzer in 1950 for her poetry collection ‘Annie Allen’, becoming the first African-American to do so. She focused much of her work on documenting the lives and struggles of African Americans and migrants, chronicling the personal celebrations and struggles of ordinary people in her community.
*
The poem we chose to share this evening is from her 1960 collection ‘The Bean Eaters’, a series of poems that came to be some of her most acclaimed work. Here she explores the experiences of people in the South Side of Chicago. We chose ‘Mrs Small’, a delightful poem, to share tonight as we couldn’t help but laugh at her description of Mrs Small’s predicament.
*
Sending lots of love ❤️

Evening everyone, tonight we’d like to a share a poem with you from the brilliant collection ‘Soft Tissue’ by Ireti Sumisire Temitope Odugbesan.
*
Ireti is a Nigerian-British writer and poet from Leicester and this is her first collection of poetry and prose, released last year.
*
The collection reflects on life and love: “from euphoric beginnings, to broken ends; from the desperate desire for companionship to the liberation of being alone.”
*
There are so many tender, beautiful poems in the collection but we were particularly drawn to this poem, titled ‘Forever Young’
*
Sending lots of love 🧡🧡🧡

POEM OF THE DAY
*
Evening everyone we hope you are all safe and well.
*
Tonight we wanted to share a poem from this gorgeous anthology of black poetry compiled by Grace Nichols.
*
While aimed at younger readers, for us this is a book for all ages. It is, as Nichols says, “a celebration of voices from the Caribbean, Afro-America, Asia, Africa and Britain” and contains some really wonderful poems.
*
With contributions from poets including Maya Angelou, Langston Hughes, @benjamin.zephaniah @nikkigiov and Dionne Brand it was so difficult to chose which to feature.
*
Anne Wallace’s “Poem” though seemed to capture our mood perfectly, specially after a walk along Brighton seafront this evening. It was such a lovely moment to see people enjoying the incredible sunset that it really brightened our day (and naturally we took a little snap too 📸 😁).
*
Sending lots of love 💛💚💙

This Sunday (8 Nov) we have prepared a sublime and lazy day for you all. In the hopes that we can boost morale, we've arranged a Feminist Bookshop takeover with comic artist @mywordsfly and Hove publisher @myriad_editions. *
We'll also get to listen in as comic artists @mywordsfly and @sabbakhanart chat about Biscuits (Assorted) - Jenny's debut graphic novel which is out Thursday 12 November - why they think comics are the future. Join in from 10 am - 11 am over on Instagram Live, send over your questions and let us know what your favourite feminist comics are in our next post.

No need to get dressed, you can enjoy everything in bed with your pj's on and your duvet pulled high. Charge your laptop, surround yourself with snacks and pile your books high. We'll see you Sunday!
