#SEETHELIGHT and the importance of the science of light and light-based technologies in our lives on 16 May, the International Day of Light.

New insect detector based on light should provide precise spraying

Researchers from DTU Fotonik have together with the Danish start-up FaunaPhotonics developed a new light module based on LED technology, which together with a sensor will measure the occurrence of harmful insects in the fields. This new insect detector ensures that farmers only spray where necessary.

“We have helped FaunaPhotonics develop a special kind of light module that can distribute light in a narrow fan-shaped strip across the crop in a field. The goal is to hit as precisely and as many insects as possible. The reflected light from the insects' wings is caught by the sensor, whereby the insects can be determined and quantified. This enables the farmer to spray much more precisely, which is an advantage for the environment, “says Senior Researcher Henrik Chresten Pedersen, who has been involved in the development.

If light is invisible, why can I see the light from what the light strikes?

Anders Thorseth, physicist and project manager at DTU Fotonik, answers:

"Light is the medium that we use to see with, so it may seem unintuitive to say that it is invisible. However, light has actually some properties that sometimes make it seem invisible."

Danmarks Tekniske Universitet - DTU

Like other schools and universities, DTU is currently busy finding solutions for both teaching and exams. DTU’s President, Anders Bjarklev, has no doubt that all upcoming exams can be conducted online.

“We’ve already begun, but we know that the heavy lifting is still ahead of us when it’s time for the big written exams with 400 students. However, I have no doubt that we’ll find a solution,” says Anders Bjarklev.

He points out that the education sector has an obligation to ensure that no students are delayed in their programmes and continues:

“I’m proud to be part of an extremely responsible institution where talented people take the situation very seriously, show what I would call exemplary behaviour, and really go the extra mile here. Even when having to balance childcare with academic issues,” says Anders Bjarklev.

When people ask me: ”Why should I study Communication technologies,” I often reply: “Image a world without communication technologies, without the Internet, without mobile communication systems.” Try to do that. Imagine world, a society without communication systems. It would be completely different from the world, the society we know and take for granted.

Now, imagine how we would have handled this Corona Pandemic without the use of communication technologies that enable us to study and work from home, to remotely monitor and control factories and to communicate with people in need for help. Just imagine. Many things would have been different, even impossible without communication technologies.

Therefore, we need engineers to develop, design, dimension and deploy communication technologies for the future society.

Arrangement: Kom til elektromagnetisme for dummies på DTU d. 6. maj kl. 15:00 - 16:30

Opdagelsen af elektromagnetismen er grundlaget for størstedelen af den forskning og innovation, som vi arbejder med på DTU Fotonik i dag. Tag bare al vores forskning i fx netværks- og cyberteknologi.

I år fejrer vi 200-året for H.C. Ørsteds opdagelse af elektromagnetismen. Dette gør vi gennem projektet HCØ2020, hvor formålet er at styrke den naturvidenskabelige dannelse, på tværs af alle aldre.

Er du nysgerrig på at vide mere om elektromagnetismen, så kom til en hyggelig eftermiddag i DTU's bibliotek og hør foredraget Elektromagnetisme for Dummies.

Foredraget er for dig, som godt kunne tænke sig at vide, hvad elektromagnetismen egentlig går ud på. Professor Henrik Bruus fra DTU Fysik vil fortælle om elektromagnetismen på et niveau, hvor alle kan følge med. Det er åbent for alle interesserede, både for ansatte/studerende på DTU og gæster uden for DTU. Så tag en ven, veninde, mor, far, barn eller barnebarn under armen, og kom så i kan blive klogere på elektromagnetismen.

In the not-too-distant future, advances in machine learning will spur a new, transformative generation of optical communication and measurement systems.

“Given the complexity of next-generation optical communication systems, we believe that machine learning will play a central role in enabling spectrally and power-efficient data transport and in this article, we describe applications of machine learning for optimizing the physical layer”, says Darko Zibar, Associate Professor and Group Leader at DTU Fotonik and one of the authors of the article “Toward Intelligence in Photonic Systems” published in Optics and Photonics News.

Emil Vosmar Denning will defend his PhD thesis "Quantum photonics in structured environments" on 11 March at 13:30 at DTU Lyngby, building 341, auditorium 23.

DTU Fotonik is participating in the project lead by researchers at the Niels Bohr Institute where the goal is to demonstrate that 15 years of quantum research in the laboratory can be successfully applied in the real world by linking quantum technology to the fibre-optic communication networks already used to access the internet.

The project is funded with nearly DKK 18 million (€2.4 million) from Innovation Fund Denmark and is running for the next four years.

The researchers from DTU Fotonik are: Professor Leif K. Oxenløwe, Assistant Professor Davide Bacco and Senior Researcher Yunhong Ding who is joining with his own company SiPhotonics.

Researchers from DTU Fotonik and St. Petersburg Academic University revealed a new formula of a semiconductor property, which may open new possibilities for optoelectronic devices.

Semiconductor materials are the backbone of digital technology. AlGaAs is among the most common semiconductors used in e.g., solar cells, lasers, and LEDs.

Like most of the semiconductors, AlGaAs can exist in two types of crystal structure — zincblende and wurtzite. Importantly, semiconductors grown in wurtzite structures can feature properties crucial for modern technology, but knowledge about wurtzite AlGaAs is poor.

“We grew a series of wurtzite AlGaAs nanowires with different Al content and through a comparative structural and optical analysis experimentally derived, for the first time, the formula for the bandgap of wurtzite AlGaAs. Moreover, we found that our nanowires have bright emission and short lifetime, suggesting that wurtzite AlGaAs is a direct bandgap material”, explains Associate Professor at DTU Fotonik, Nika Akopian.

Novel and advanced materials are considered vital for new and sustainable technologies, and AlGaAs nanowires are certainly an excellent example, as they provide a promising platform for the fabrication of advanced devices.
