Hearing Systems DTU

The goal of our research is to increase the understanding of the functioning of the human auditory system.

Our group, “Hearing Systems,” at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) is concerned with speech communication, auditory signal processing and perception, audiology, objective measures of the auditory function and hearing-instrument signal processing. The goal of this research is to increase our understanding of the functioning of the human auditory system and to provide insights that are useful for technical applications such as hearing aids, speech recognition systems, hearing diagnostics tools and cochlear implants.

After almost two months of full lockdown of our facilities at DTU, we are happy to announce that we can now once more invite test participants into our listening labs. http://www.hea.healthtech.dtu.dk/news/Nyhed?id={8943BB1A-FD70-41DF-AF83-27EB0B28089F}

Torsten Dau, Head of Hearing Systems, was invited speaker at the meeting of the American Auditory Society (AAS) in Arizona (March 5-7) and gave an interesting talk on the interplay between hearing loss, attention, and cortical synchronization during speech perception. "Effects of Sensorineural Hearing Loss on Cortical Synchronization to Competing Speech During Selective Attention." Torsten Dau. Co-authors: Søren A. Fuglsang, Jonatan Märcher-Rørsted and Jens Hjortkjær, Hearing Systems Section, Dept. of Health Technology, DTU. DTU Skylab Digital Lunch Talk: Dr. Axel Ahrens, DTU Compute – Designing Audio for Virtual Spaces

Join us at DTU Skylab on Thursday 5th March for this exciting talk. Why is sound important to VR experiences? Often, the focus of VR development is on graphic performance – photorealism, frames-per-second, and interactivity. However, sound play a very important role in how we interpret our surroundings through auditory cues.

Postdoctoral researcher Axel Ahrens from DTU is an expert in designing audio for virtual environments. In this talk, he will present an overview of the techniques and technologies within this domain.

Limited seats. Sign up here: https://www.conferencemanager.dk/dtuskylab-lunchtalks-virtualaudio

healthtech.dtu.dk DTU Health Tech invites students to learn about all the exciting projects, programmes and courses that the department offers within education.

There was great interest from the community, when Hearing Systems (DTU Health Tech) in collaboration with Lyngby-Taarbæk Vidensby Viden & Vin invited people for an evening in the lab. Innovation Manager at DTU Health Tech Stine Kruse and Professor Torsten Dau talked about the latest methods in hearing research; among other things, the cocktail party problem and how to cognitively reduce tinnitus and control a hearing aid.

These days 40 high school students from all over the country are visiting the Hearing System lab as part of their DTU work experience to learn about the field of speech and hearing sciences. After a brief introduction, the students are presented to the lab facilities, are listening to demos in the Audio Visual Immersion Lab (AVIL) with the 64 loudspeakers and also have the opportunity to try out themselves how a hearing loss may sound and how a conversation can be very challenged if you have a hearing loss.
