Seventh-day Adventist leaders in Puerto Rico are still baffled by a series of earthquakes which began yesterday, and culminated with a 6.4 magnitude tremor early this on January 7.

Pastor Ted Wilson

Please pray for the people of Puerto Rico as they face multiple earthquakes resulting in death, devastation, and electrical infrastructure interruption. Pray for our church members and their safety as well as their Christian humanitarian outreach in Christ’s name to bring relief to those suffering from the earthquakes. Pray for Seventh-day Adventist members in Puerto Rico as they follow in the footprints of Christ and through His power.

Please pray for Australia! Our hearts go out to our dear brothers and sisters down under, and to the entire country of Australia as they are experiencing a catastrophic situation with long-burning fires—resulting in enormous loss of life and property. So far, the fires have burned more than six-million hectares (12.35 million acres) of land across Australia, at least 24 people have lost their lives, and more than 1500 homes have been destroyed, including many belonging to Seventh-day Adventist church members. In addition, camp meetings, summer camps for youth and various uplifting and inspiring events have been cancelled due to the raging fires. Tragically, Australia’s treasured wildlife has suffered tremendously. The loss of koalas, kangaroos, birds and more has been horrific, with estimates of nearly half a billion of God’s creatures dying in the fire.

We are thankful to @ADRA for actively providing help in various communities of Australia, and for the Adventist churches and members across the country who have helped in various ways and contributed generously and widely during this time.

Let us plead that God will give each one in Australia strength, courage, and fortitude in the midst of this very trying and difficult situation. Let us pray that God will send rain, and that the winds will calm. And let’s remember to pray for the firefighters who are bravely battling the flames, and for those who are caring for the many people affected by these fires. Surely tragedies such as this are yet another sign that the Lord is coming soon! Let us pray for strength and courage to share the hope that we have with a world desperately in need of a Savior.

Local authorities say this is the worst flooding to hit the country since 2013

ADRA in Victoria

There is so much devastation. So many families have lost their homes. Yesterday, we received access from the police to support the remote communities - Orbost and also Sarsfield with food, water, bread, bedding, diesel for the generators and the Red Cross needed more men's packs. We can't thank you enough for your words of encouragement and prayers. There are volunteers here helping who have caravans packed ready to leave if the fires reach them.

Thank you also to the Casey crew for supplying a van full of essential items late last night.

We will keep you updated with any needs as they arise.

"Known locally as Ursula, the typhoon forced tens of thousands of people to evacuate over Christmas, and disrupted holiday celebrations in Asia’s largest Catholic nation.

At least 20 people have been killed in a typhoon that devastated parts of central Philippines over Christmas, The Associated Press reports."

This time of year tends to be pretty commercialized and busy. We can be easily distracted from the true essence of the season. While we know Jesus wasn't born during this time, the root of Christmas is the celebration of His birth. God sending His Son to ultimately die for our sins is the greatest expression of love.

🔴 ADRA MADE TWO PUBLIC COMMITMENTS regarding the care for refugee women, men, and children 🔴

On December 17 and 18, the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) joined more than 2,000 humanitarian practitioners and member states at the first-ever Global Refugee Forum in Geneva, Switzerland to find transforming solutions to the world refugee crisis, benefitting both refugees and their host communities.

At the forum, ADRA pledged to support the most vulnerable ensuring urgent assistance is provided to female-headed households, pregnant and lactating women, families with children under five, elderly people and/or people with disabilities, and women and girls affected by sexual and gender-based violence.

🔴 ADRA made two commitments:

1️⃣ As the official international humanitarian arm of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) in partnership with the Adventist church, which has the second-largest protestant school system in the world, made a joint announcement of a new global campaign, “Every Child. Everywhere. In School.” The campaign is an urgent call to leaders around the world that all children, regardless of race, age, nationality, gender, disability, religion or origin, have a right to earn and complete an education, and that being in school is a recognition of the value and potential of each individual child. One of the factors that promoted the campaign is that we do not accept that refugee children are five times more likely to be out of school than their non-refugee peers.

2️⃣ Our second commitment is for the crisis in Venezuela. Never before has Latin America suffered a social and economic crisis of this magnitude, a crisis that continues to disrupt the lives of millions of people across the region. A whole-of-society approach is a priority for any work with refugees and host communities, especially when it comes to addressing the needs of the most vulnerable, such as women, children, and people with special needs. It is for these vulnerable populations that ADRA remains committed to playing a key role in implementing a global compact on refugees and especially in the Venezuela crisis. As a result, ADRA has committed one million dollars to the response efforts in Venezuela. These resources will be used to leverage other public funding that ADRA has received, including UNHCR, to ensure there are no gaps in our interventions. These projects will be implemented in Ecuador, Columbia, Brazil, Peru, and Argentina.

ADRA’s Vice President for Programs, Imad Madanat, shared the humanitarian agency’s commitment at the Global Refugee Forum. More than a third of the world’s displaced population—some 25.9 million people, according to a 2018 UNHCR report—have been forced to flee their own countries entirely, leaving their homes behind and becoming refugees. Refugees are defined as people forced to leave their country in order to escape war, persecution or natural disaster.

The forum, according to the UNHCR, is an opportunity to namely “ease pressures on host countries, enhance refugee self-reliance, expand access to third-country solutions and support conditions of origin for return in safety and dignity.” ADRA continues working to improve the lives of 16.3 million people around the world in 2018, including refugees in Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and South America, well after the media spotlight has moved on to the next disaster.

As of early September, nearly 179,000 Venezuelans resided in Brazil, 330,000 Venezuelans resided in Ecuador, and more than 1.4 million Venezuelans were residing in Colombia, according to the Regional Interagency Coordination Platform for Refugees and Migrants from Venezuela. To date, more than 4.5 million Venezuelans are living outside their home country. This number is expected to rise to 6.5 million by the end of next year.
