Matheson & Co.

Kate, you're too kind! I had a wondering time connecting with this stellar woman and was honoured when she asked me to be a part of Matheson & Co.'s practitioner spotlight series.
Besides loving my job as a Naturopath, I've discovered that there's nothing I enjoy more than being an entrepreneur, so naturally I jumped at the refreshing opportunity to be interviewed on some tidbits I've discovered in my journey to building my Naturopathic practice.

I've launched a new series on Healthpreneur-U I think you’re going to love 🙌

It’s a spotlight series where each month I’m highlighting awesome practitioners who are out there making a difference AND killing it in their practices so you can learn from their journey and also see what is possible for your own.

I could not be more excited about this first practitioner. Dr. Courtney Holmberg is a Naturopathic Doctor here in Toronto specializing in hormones, digestion and autoimmunity. She has been practicing for just about 5 years, is packed to the brim doing exactly what she loves and is servicing the heck out of her patients. 💪

I hope her wonderful wisdom will serve to inspire and motivate you to put a little thought, strategy and effort in to the business side of your practice. Because Courtney is a perfect example of the incredible results you can see when you do.

Here is my interview with Dr Courtney Holmberg. Enjoy!

Debunking Collagen, and why everyone’s supplementing it

A core principle of naturopathic medicine is to nourish the body and ensure it is getting the appropriate balance of nutrients to stay healthy. Traditionally, this was achieved in a hunter-gather diet by eating colourful whole foods and by practicing “nose-to-tail” eating of meat, which included the consumption of skin, cartilage, marrow, tendons/ligaments, and other parts of the animal that are now typically discarded. Unfortunately, much of this practice has been lost as a result of prepared meats, microwaves, and canned soups over homemade stocks. As a result, our diets have become deprived of an important protein, known as #collagen.

courtneyholmbergnd.ca Before you start taking collagen, it is highly recommended you speak to a qualified naturopath, like Dr. Courtney Holmberg to determine if collagen would be safe and appropriate for your own personal health and well-being.

Bone Broth Soup Recipe

Bone broth is a rich source of gelatin, collagen, and the amino acids glycine and glutamine - all of which are critical to maintaining the tight junction in your gut, and preventing intestinal permeability (aka #leakygut)

Intestinal permeability is correlated with numerous conditions such as food intolerances, eczema, and most autoimmune conditions like Crohn's/colitis, Hashimoto's, alopecia, etc.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

#Ashwagandha might sound like a foreign country, but it is actually an herb that can be beneficial for your body. The scientific name given to the herb is Withania Somnifera and it belongs to the Solanaceae family. Some know it by its common name of Indian Ginseng since it originates from India.

On today of all days, let’s show our gratitude to Mother Earth. Walk more, take shorter showers, reduce your use of plastic, but above all, revamp your diet.
Most don’t realize the greatest environmental impacts come less from our day to day routines, and more from the foods we place on our dinner plate.
Beef, one of the largest food industries in the world, is responsible for 150 billions gallons of methane production PER DAY.
The average American uses 100 gallons of water daily, whereas it requires over 1,799 gallons of water to produce just 1 pound of beef (irrigation, drinking, feeding, and processing).
The food industry makes up over a QUARTER of the greenhouse gases emissions daily.
So while let’s all continue to recycle and walk wherever we can, also look further into your beef consumption and consider cutting back a bit 🌿🌎🌿🌍🌿🌏🌿

all about the #JOMO (joy of missing out) this weekend

I was having a wonderful conversation with a patient last week about self care, when it quickly dawned on me how much I've been lacking my own self care lately.

With the holiday madness upon us, my practice at an all time high, and commitments pulling me in what seemed like all directions, the reality of burnout was becoming all too real.

I felt like a hypocrite, preaching the importance of prioritizing your health when I've been failing to do so my self. Sure, I still get up every morning to exercise and always eat my veggies, but I've also been drinking too much coffee, staying up too late, and spending too much time in an overwhelmed haze.

Stumbling upon this trending idea of JOMO last week felt all too serendipitous. So I listened to the universe, and spent this weekend practicing how to say no.

I turned down plans, slowed down, cuddled my dog, opened the book I started but never finished, and finally crossed off some of the things I'VE been wanting to do lately (like try this mushroom coffee from @foursigmatic 👌🏼)

Maybe I'm just getting old, but the joy of missing out feels all kinds of good. Today I'm setting some serious intentions for the week to slow down and maintain some of this rejuvenation 😌

It's cold out there, folks ❄️🌨❄️
Len and I nearly froze our paws off at the dog park yesterday. Once warm and toasty indoors, it quickly dawned on me that many may not have that same luxury.
@mikearnold11 and I had a ton of old hats, mitts, & scarves buried in the closet, so today we loaded a box full of cold gear and handled it to our pals at the Parkdale community centre who spend their nights outdoors.
If you've got a draw full of mix matches mittens or cold gear you'll never wear, I encourage you to pass it along to someone who may not only want it, but needs it

Before Taking Over-The-Counter Pain Relievers, Try These Things First

Pain is something we’re all familiar with. It presents in a variety of different ways, and with a variety of characteristics. And while pain may have a very physical manifestation, it is acknowledged to be a complex physiological and psychologist phenomenon

Six Nutrients that could Reduce Risks of Autoimmune Disease

Our bodies require the right nutrition and nutrients to function correctly. When we do not get the proper intake of these things, different functions and responses stop working correctly. Not only does maintaining the right levels of nutrients help strengthen the body’s immune system, but it can also reduce the risks of autoimmune disease.
