Why all women should think about Alzheimer's prevention in their 40's - Dr. Shawna Darou

Did you know that if you are a woman, your lifetime chance of developing Alzheimer’s disease is now greater than your risk of developing breast cancer? A woman’s lifetime risk of developing Alzheimer’s is now 1 in 6, compared to her lifetime breast cancer risk of 1 in 8. This is a condition that requires our immediate attention!

As a lifelong women's health advocate, I truly had no idea how prevalent Alzheimer's disease was, and how little people know about prevention, early diagnosis and early treatment.

The good news is that there are solutions, and they fit very well in the framework of Naturopathic Medicine and Functional Medicine. I've been intensely studying Alzheimer's disease recently, and learning the reCODE system of Alzheimer's treatment and prevention from Dr. Dale Bredesen (author of the book: The End of Alzheimer's).

Stay tuned for more information about prevention, early diagnosis and treatment.

I 100% agree.

I sit across from women who have done the opposite of this for years. Years. You can. You can put everything else first for years before you notice.
.
And the signs don’t come screaming into the room when they are ready to tell you to go the other way. You’ll still preform at work. And at the gym. It’s when you’re sitting on the edge of your bed in tears wondering where all your happiness went. That’s where it shows up first.
.
Your PMS will be worse. Your cramps. Your skin will be dry and breaking out. You won’t sleep through the night. You’ll get your hot flashes back. You’ll have trouble managing your weight. Tired. All. The. Time.

Burn out creeps in to the softer areas of your health. Hormones. Mood. Libido.

Body first. Business second. Eat and sleep today to prepare for tomorrow. Today isn’t meant for recovery from yesterday 💕.

Commonly prescribed hypothyroidism drug has 'no clinically relevant benefits': Report | CBC News

I just caught this article in the news this morning, and had to chime in with an opinion. First of all, I agree with the first line of the article "Treating a number 'doesn't make them better'", however not treating women with SYMPTOMS of hypothyroidism, whose numbers are not optimal, or who don't feel better with standard treatment with Eltroxin is simply not good enough.

Many women do not feel that their symptoms of hypothyroidism improve with medication - fatigue, gaining weight, feeling cold, dry skin, hair thinning, constipation, brain fog, and more. The reason is that is not treating the ROOT of the problem: autoimmunity in the case of Hashimoto's thyroiditis (which is very common), or in other cases the thyroid imbalance is due to chronic high stress.

This is why it is essential to first fully assess the thyroid both with through bloodwork (TSH, free T3, free T4, thyroid antibodies), and perhaps also add a basal temperature reading.

I also want to point out that with fertility, regardless of symptoms, there is evidence that treating subclinical hypothyroidism both improves fertility rates, and also reduces miscarriages.

If we are getting to the root cause of thyroid disorder - inflammation, autoimmunity, stress, infection - it is highly likely that there will be an improvement in symptoms. Let's look at the 'subclinical' numbers as a signal that there is an imbalance, and dig deeper. Simply not treating women with symptoms + borderline TSH levels is not good enough.

Has the change of seasons got you thinking about a spring cleanse? I love the idea of a reset, setting new health intentions and riding the momentum to eat better, move more and take better care of your health. There are however a few pitfalls to be aware of, especially of taking on something too extreme.

In this time of go-go-go and hustle, I stand behind this quote. It really is about how well you relax. Our bodies are designed to work hard - mentally and physically, but we need to put just as much of a focus on the relaxation. This is known as the stress cycle - for every period of high exertion, you need a period of rest.

Without these breaks and regular rest, your stress response stays turned on, and your body cannot repair. Please don't wait until your body forces you to stop!

What is your best way to take a restorative break? Napping? Meditation? Time in nature?

10 things I wish everyone knew about Unexplained Infertility - Dr. Shawna Darou

Have you been diagnosed with 'unexplained infertility'. This is a frustrating diagnosis because it's less clear about the direction to take - keep trying naturally, start to go to a fertility clinic, go right to IVF,... Here is a short article on 10 things I wish everyone knew about unexplained infertility. The most important is that 'unexplained' simply means 'not yet diagnosed.'

drshawnadarou.com By Dr. Shawna Darou, ND As a naturopath with a large hormone focus in my practice, I see many people with fertility struggles. The diagnosis that most commonly brings people to a me is ‘unexplained infertility’. This confusing diagnosis leaves women unsure of what to do next – should they move...

So true...

All of your answers are within 🧘🏽‍♂️

When we seek in outside sources, we disempower and disconnect from self 😬

We busy our days in search of fulfilment, when all we have to do is:

Be still 🧘🏽‍♂️🧘🏻‍♀️

Be silent 🤫🤫

Be yourself 🌝🌗🌚

What are you researching right now? I absolutely love when women come into my office with a list of things they have researched, great questions about their own health, and an invested interest in understanding how to restore their health.

Are you an active researcher too? Is there something you would like to learn more about?

SIBO? endometriosis? Hashimotos? intestinal permeability? brain injury? sleep training? baby food introduction? unexplained infertility?

Is Your Hustle Harming Your Health? - Dr. Shawna Darou

Are you getting burned out from the hustle?
We’ve been living in the time of the hustle, where more is better – longer hours at work, more time at the gym, more extreme diet changes, constant social media updates, endless emails and inboxes we can’t get on top of, too many work meetings, and to top that off most women also have many layers of responsibility (family, children, household, finances,…). Has your period of productivity exceeded 12 hours each day too?

The hustle is taking a huge toll on our health. It’s burning us out younger and younger, and creating the depletion in the body that can result in serious illness. When you’re constantly pushing your limits, there is no reserve if you get sick or have to deal with a major life event – you’re vulnerable, and your health can take a serious downturn.

Check out the full article - there are solutions! Can you guess what some of them are?

Shifting away from the constant inner critic can be challenging, especially when we are used to having a constant stream of negative talk in our minds. Consider how your life would change if you instead praised yourself, and started with self-acceptance exactly as you are right now. Radical acceptance opens the doorway to peace, happiness and also better relationships.

I'm talking about this because it has a great impact on your physical health and especially your hormonal health. Without self-love, there really isn't self-care.

Cycle tracking can give you an edge to optimize your performance in all areas of life: sports and athletics, work performance, focus and productivity, giving presentations, networking and maintaining your relationships. Not only is your PMS predictable, but so is your ability to connect, days where your strength is better, days where you're more extroverted, days when you are more productive, and more.

5 things you may not know about Endometriosis - Dr. Shawna Darou

Endometriosis is a massively under-diagnosed condition. Many women are living with chronic pelvic pain and debilitating periods, without knowing that this is an immune-mediated, inflammatory condition rather than a hormone imbalance. When your blood sugar is out of balance it can affect stress hormones (cortisol, adrenalin), sleep quality, PMS, period regularity and even androgen expression (more signs of testosterone). Remember that all of your hormones are interconnected, and often blood sugar issues and insulin resistance are part of the root cause of hormone imbalance, and not only with PCOS.

Healing Hashimoto's

New blog post today: "Healing Hashimoto's". Hashimoto's is an autoimmune thyroid condition that is extremely common in women, and is the most common cause of hypothyroidism. The good news, is that there are many factors to address to restore thyroid function and lower inflammation: starting with the gut, nutrient dense nutrition, clearing toxins, testing & treating infections, and of course looking at stress.

Making Changes With Kindness - Dr. Shawna Darou

I’m working on a new system for women’s health, and as I go through each section I am finding that self-love is absolutely at the core. I believe that if we change our perspective and treat ourselves as someone we care for, self-care practices then become quite simple.

Many of you are off work today, and have a little space. I hope you're using this time to rest, breathe fully and let your nervous system come down. When life is constantly on the go, it's easy to lose track of the importance of rest. Remember that it’s not how hard you work that influences your body’s response, it’s how well you come down from stress that counts.

I was asked last week about my top tips for self-love and self-care, and wanted to share them here today too. I hope you’re having a wonderful Family Day today.

(1) If you’re making food changes for health, make sure there is room for moderation and pleasure - If it feels like a diet, it won’t last.

(2) It’s so important to build downtime into your week - your body’s stress response isn’t about how hard you work, it’s how well you come down.

(3) Tracking your cycle can be an amazing act of self-care by learning your own rhythms through the month. Don’t forget to watch some of the positive traits that fluctuate through the month too - for example your focus, ability to connect, energy levels and athletic performance may also follow your cycle.

(4) There’s nothing more powerful than exercise to shift your mood and mindset. Daily movement of whatever type feels best for you is a non-negotiable part of self-care, especially if you have a more sedentary lifestyle.

(5) If you want to make changes to your body or your health, starting from a place of self-love and self-acceptance always works best. You can’t hate your body into one that you’ll love.
