U.S. Coast Guard Sector Detroit
Around 2:00 a.m. this morning, U.S. Coast Guard rescue crews from Small Boat Station’s Port Huron and Harbor Beach, and an air crew from Air Station Detroit responded to a capsized boat in Lake Huron, near Port Sanilac, MI.
Two adult men were fishing in an 18 foot boat around 10:00 a.m. Thursday morning when their boat was overwhelmed by a wave and capsized.
The daughter of one of the men notified the U.S. Coast Guard around 11:30 p.m. that her dad usually returns after 4 hours, and provided a normal fishing spot.
The men were rescued after 14 hours, and after 2 hours of U.S. Cost Guard search efforts. They were able to survive because they were wearing life jackets, they stayed with their boat by sitting on the hull, and they had a flash light to shine at the U.S. Coast Guard helicopter. This light assisted the searches in finding them!
This case had a great ending, and can be accredited to both people wearing life jackets, filing a float plan, and having a flash light as an additional life saving device.
