Canadian Nursing Students' Association

The Canadian Nursing Students' Association would like to bring light to Orange Shirt Day, a campaign that commemorates the survivors of the residential school system. In 1973, Phyllis Webstad was forced to remove a brand new orange shirt that she received from her grandmother at a residential (mission) school she attended in British Columbia. She voiced that "her feelings never mattered" which began the "Orange Shirt Day- Every Child Matters" campaign. Please join the Canadian Nursing Students' Association in commemorating the survivors of the residential school system today on September 30th and every day as we move forward into reconciliation. #orangeshirtday #reconciliation

The Canadian Nursing Students' Association (CNSA) is excited to recognize Mental Illness Awareness Week from October 1st to 5th, 2018. This week is coordinated by the Canadian Alliance on Mental Illness and Mental Health (CAMIMH) and is designed to help open the eyes of Canadians to the reality of mental illness. As a professional organization who strives to be the primary resource for Canadian nursing students, the CNSA acknowledges the need for health care professionals (including nurses) to be knowledgeable on mental illness and mental health and to support those who may experience mental illness in their everyday lives. Please join us in speaking about the legalization of ma*****na and its implication for nurses, Indigenous mental health, self-care strategies for students, LGBTQ2SIA+ mental health and seniors' mental health this October.

[09/21/18]   Opportunity for student involvement in nursing education in BC!:

"Greetings

There is a newly formed ‘Nursing Education Planning Council’ (NEPC) – we are needing 1-2 nursing student reps ASAP!!

The Mandate of the NEPC is to establish and oversee priority policy agendas in nursing education (entry to practice and transition to practice) with corresponding working groups. The Council will provide provincially-focused forum for collaboration and consultation on priority issues and considerations related to nursing education including strategic advice and direction in addressing recommendations in the Nursing Policy Secretariat Report (David Byers Report, 2018). Membership includes folks from MoH, MAEST (Advanced Ed), NECBC (Nursing Education Council of BC), Deans & Directors Council, Chief Nursing Officer Council, Professional Practice, FNHA, Chief Operating Officer, etc.

Our next meeting is Thursday, October 4th from 0900-1230 h at BCPSQC Training Room 8201-750 West Pender St., Vancouver. In-person attendance is preferred but Skype options are available. Meetings will then be the first Thursday of each month from 0900-1230h in Vancouver. MoH will reimburse the 2 students for travel costs for 2 face-to-face meetings/year. The students must be from BC and preferably the lower mainland or Nanaimo/Comox/Victoria to enable travel to Vancouver at reasonable expense.

This is a key time in nursing education and it is imperative that we have the voice of nursing students at this Council!

If you're interested, please contact Leslie Sundby at leslie.sundby@viu.ca"

Canadian Nurses Association (CNA-AIIC)

In an historic moment at CNA’s 2018 annual meeting, members voted in favour of expanding CNA’s membership to represent all nurses. Michael Villeneuve, CNA's CEO, took a moment to welcome nurses and to explain the options that will soon be available for LPNs/RPNs and RPNs until membership models are put in place.

The vote to amend the CNA bylaws to include other nursing designations within CNA was the first step. Determining what the membership models will look like is the important next step. Over the coming few months, CNA will review its governance and membership models to evaluate the structures that need to be put in place to reflect the unique and collective needs of the different regulated nursing groups.
