We're a non-profit community legal clinic serving low income residents of Hamilton. In addition, to providing ‘traditional” poverty law services including legal advice & referrals and legal representation, the Clinic is involved in public legal education, community development and law reform.
Hamilton Community Legal Clinic was launched on April 1, 2010. Our not-for-profit organization is an amalgamation of the three independent community legal clinics that had been operating in the City for over thirty years, Dundurn Community Legal Services, Hamilton Mountain Legal & Community Services and McQuesten Legal & Community Services. The clinics merged so they could provide legal services to more low income Hamilton residents. Also in 2010, the Clinic and the Centre de santé communautaire Hamilton/Niagara (CSCH/N) reached an agreement for the delivery of French language poverty law services in Hamilton. The Clinic is bilingual and has a French language team. With the support of the CSCH/N we do outreach to stay connected with the Francophone community in Hamilton. The clinic is run by a volunteer board of directors and we are funded by Legal Aid Ontario. All help is private and confidential.
Mission: Hamilton Community Legal Clinic is a community based not for profit agency whose diverse team of caring professionals and volunteers provides legal services to low income individuals and communities to promote access to justice and to improve quality of life. We do this through: summary advice and referral, representation, community development, law reform and public legal education Our Vision Hamilton Community Legal Clinic will be recognized and valued as an important provider of poverty law services and advocate for social change.

URGENT MESSAGE TO STAKEHOLDERS
Premier Doug Ford’s recent Ontario budget has cut funding to Legal Aid Ontario by $133 million, which is 30% of LAO’s budget, retroactive to April 1, 2019. The 30% LAO budget cut has already had a direct negative impact on HCLC/CJCH and the services we provide.
HCLC/CJCH is committed to upholding the rights of low-income people. We improve the quality of life of marginalized communities by providing legal advice and representation and public legal education.
The budget cuts to Legal Aid Ontario will have a devastating impact on HCLC/CJCH’s ability to provide legal services to Ontario’s most vulnerable people.
We are calling on Premier Ford and Attorney General Caroline Mulroney to make a commitment to access to justice; to respect the commitment of their government to not decrease front line services; and to confirm that funding for community legal-aid clinics will not be decreased.
HERE IS WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP STOP THESE CUTS!
1. E-MAIL, CALL OR WRITE to Premier Doug Ford, Attorney General Caroline Mulroney and your local MPP. CONTACT INFORMATION is provided below. Please send them the MESSAGE TO PREMIER FORD AND ATTORNEY GENERAL MULRONEY given below (or compose your own message) urging them to STOP THE CUTS TO LEGAL AID!
2. TELL US YOUR STORY: Tell us in your own words how HCLC/CJCH, another legal-aid clinic or anyone in Legal Aid Ontario helped you or someone in your life. WE NEED TO HEAR YOUR STORIES of how we helped you, in your words. This will help us defend against the imminent LAO budget cuts that will hurt legal-aid services to vulnerable Ontarians.

MESSAGE TO PREMIER FORD AND ATTORNEY GENERAL MULRONEY
Dear Premier Ford and Attorney General Mulroney:
Stop the Cuts to Legal Aid
I am writing today to urge you to stop your catastrophic budget cuts to Legal Aid Ontario.
These cuts will hurt Ontario’s most vulnerable people the most, including low- to moderate-income tenants and injured workers who need access to direct legal services, community legal education and advocacy for their legal rights that are provided by Legal Aid Ontario through legal-aid clinics like Hamilton Community Legal Clinic/Clinique juridique communautaire de Hamilton.
Access to justice is the cornerstone of any democratic society so I urge you to reverse all cuts to Legal Aid Ontario.
