The 2020 Melmerby Triathlon has been postponed to 2021.
As we all try to navigate through these unprecedented times we are forced to think about the future and how that will look in the weeks, months and perhaps years to come. One thing is for certain, the world is a different place these days and will be for the foreseeable future. Now is the time we all need to come together by staying apart and do the right thing for the health and safety of our community.
Given the current situation, it is with a heavy heart that we officially announce the Postponement of all Johnny Miles Events up to August 31, 2020 which include;
Miss Miles May 10, 2020 New Date May 9, 2021
YMCA Indoor Triathlon May 31, 2020 New Date May 30, 2021
Johnny Miles Running Event June 20 & 21, 2020 New Date June 19 & 20, 2021
Run for the Lobster July 12, 2020 New Date July 11, 2021
Melmerby Triathlon July 18 & 19, 2020 New Date July 17 & 18, 2021
The decision to postpone our events until 2021 was a difficult one. In the end, we looked to the guidance of the Chief Medical Officer of Health for Nova Scotia, Dr. Strang. Considering the clear directives to continue to self-isolate, socially distance, and keep social gatherings small, along with the subsequent state of emergency that has been declared in Nova Scotia, we have accepted the real likelihood that those restrictions will remain in place for some time, likely throughout the summer. The decision to postpone the events also avoids adding undue stress on our organizing committee, participants and volunteers in the face of this uncertainty.
Why not postpone until the fall? With the timeline of the pandemic uncertain, postponing until later this year was not an option. COVID-19 concerns are proving to be ever changing, and we cannot predict when it will be deemed safe to hold a large scale public event. We fully respect the decisions that are being made by the health authorities to keep our communities safe and we want to be part of the solution, not part of the problem.
We have long-standing relationships with our event partners, sponsors and suppliers and have been in touch with them to share the news. While disappointed, they assured us this was the right and really only decision we could make. We’ve assured them we’ll all be back and stronger than ever in 2021!
While we know many will be disappointed it is our hope that you will understand our position and continue to support us going forward. Because we have up-front costs associated with our events, we will execute our cancellation policy which states that all registered participants will automatically be deferred to the rescheduled date the following year. We will be as flexible as we can and will allow the transfer between any of the 2021 events ( ie. if you are registered for Miss Miles 2020 you could do Johnny Miles 2021 instead ) or even defer to 2022. By doing deferments it will ensure we survive the cancellation of the 2020 events financially and live to fight or in our case run another day.
Thank you again for your understanding and support and we look forward to seeing you all in 2021!
Terry & Carol
Refund / Deferral Policy for All Johnny Miles Events:
For your convenience we offer refunds up until two weeks prior to all events. The cut off for refunds for all events will be the Sunday night, two weeks prior to race day, at Midnight, no questions asked. The refund will be for the race fee only and does not include the Race Roster Admin Fee, that can’t be refunded as it has been charged by Race Roster. There will also be a $5.00 processing fee for all refunds. In the case where an event is cancelled due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances beyond our control, all registered participants will be deferred to the rescheduled date or the following year but there will be no refunds in this case. Out of respect for our volunteers, we will not be able to mail out race kits that are not picked up. If you can’t attend the event someone can pick up your race kit for you as long as it’s done prior to the start of the race. Thank you for your understanding.

Bridgetown Triathlon 2020
It is with great sadness that I announce that the 2020 version on the Bridgetown Triathlon will be canceled do to the ongoing world situation. Because of the requirement for social distancing, it is impossible to get the pre-planning done in time to get the race underway even if restrictions are lifted soon. Hopefully everyone understands this and puts it all aside until 2021.
Stay safe and we hope to see everyone in 2021

See you in August!
66 people have recorded their January distance. Collectively, we trained 30,402 km. in January - that's 3/4 of the distance around the world - in one month!
Hopefully, a few more people will post their distance and help us circumnavigate the earth in January.
It's been interesting reading the comments that people have posted. Some people put in a lot of distance in January, while others focused on improving their swim technique, or strength and conditioning. They may not have racked up as much distance in January, but they will likely be well prepared for the upcoming triathlon season. A few others have been injured and haven't been able to train much. And...a few may be giving the rest of us a head start before they start training in February.
Remember, this is a journey, not a race! See you in Sherbrooke on February 29.

This article about cross country skiing in Triathlon Magazine Canada is very timely now that winter has arrived in N.S. Cross country skiing is excellent cross-training for triathletes, and a great outdoor alternative to bike trainers, treadmills, and pools in the winter. Cross country skiing develops aerobic fitness, balance, core strength, works your quads (especially skate skiing), arms, lower back, upper back, and shoulders and, for triathletes who like speed, it can be exhilarating to fly down hills at 30-40 km/hr.
The Halifax Nordic Ski Club grooms trails for skate skiing and classic at several venues around HRM and offers adult skate skiing lessons starting January 11. In Cape Breton, both Cape Breton Nordic and North Highlands Nordic groom trails and offer lessons. Check out the Cross Country Nova Scotia website for more info.
