Why it’s so hard and expensive to rent a car in Canada right now | Globalnews.ca

Tried To Rent A Car Lately?

Have you tried to rent a car on a recent vacation or future booking? The prices have gone waaaaayyyyyy up! During the pandemic, rental companies sold off more than 1/3 of their fleets. Now, with travel increasing as restrictions were eliminated, traveler demand is outstripping supply so cars are either not available or have become very expensive to rent.

I recently reserved 2 cars for a future holiday to Ontario, and the prices were double what they were in September 2019. Can't remember the last time I paid more to rent a car for a short trip than I did for the plane ticket but such has become the cost of post-pandemic travel.

Bon Voyage!

Why it’s so hard and expensive to rent a car in Canada right now | Globalnews.ca Some analysts expect the events of the last 15 months amid COVID-19 have culminated in renewed demand in June to push car rental prices higher.

ONE TIME PAYMENT TO OLDER SENIORS

Canadian seniors born on or before June 30, 1947, who are receiving Old Age Security, will receive a one-time taxable payment of $500 in August 2021. It will be an automatic payment.

There is no income test to qualify and the income will not affect receipt of Guaranteed Income Supplement or other benefits. Income Tax will not be withheld on the funds either; for the average senior that will mean income tax owing of $125 over and above their usual circumstance unless of course they are low income.

The money is a gesture from the government to offer financial support to those over 74. COVID-19 and all that it entailed was very hard on seniors. Lockdowns, the threat of illness, and the absence of family made the last 16 months difficult.

As well, beginning this month, OAS payments will increase 1.3% and effective July 2022, the payments will increase 10% for seniors over 75, the highest increase ever, aside from indexed increases.

Minister Deb Schulte was quoted as saying "The government is continuing to improve the financial security of Canadians in retirement after a lifetime of working hard."

NOT EVERYONE LOVES THE FAME THAT A GOLD MEDAL BRINGS

I love watching the Olympics. The excitement and passion of athletes in competition in so many varied events, is wonderful to watch. IS IT A SCAM? HOW TO TELL IF YOU'VE BEEN CONTACTED BY THE CRA.

Once tax returns have been filed, CRA turns its attention to its pre and post assessment review programs. It is also the time of year when CRA scams become more frequent. CRA gives us guidance as to how to proceed when they contact you and when to be suspicious.

Why Wait? The Science Behind Procrastination

Are You A Procrastinator?

At Calgary's Choice Tax Services, it seems we are being approached each year, by more and more taxpayers who have fallen behind in their income tax filing. I'm not referring to filing a bit late. I'm talking about those who haven't filed for 3 years or more, and in some cases, as many as 10 years behind.

The mole hill becomes a mountain where income tax filing is concerned. Putting it off one year that turns into two, brings with it apprehension, frustration and a great deal of stress. The most difficult situations usually are those of sole proprietors. Gathering receipts and records from years past can be an overwhelming task.

It's easy for us more organized folks to say "get it done" but what is behind the procrastination? We thought we would do a little research to better understand these clients. The Science of Procrastination (though an older article), sheds some light on the topic to gain a better understanding of the "complicated failure of self regulation......a result of the inability to manage emotions at its very foundation".

CRA Is There, Catching All Your Mistakes!

If you miss claiming the income from a T5, T4 or T3 slip (most common ones) on your income tax return, CRA will most often catch your mistake.

Sometimes, it is caught immediately after filing and sometimes by CRA during their matching program early the following year. Nevertheless, CRA will reassess your return and charge you interest on the additional outstanding balance.

If you neglect to claim the income from the same slip, 2 years in a row or more, CRA may also charge you a penalty....consider it the gift that keeps on giving! You won't find a collections officer on your front step and you most certainly won't be hauled off to jail.

As tax professionals, we have the ability to check the slips CRA has on file for you if we are authorized to do so, but slips on file with CRA are not always up-to-date at the time you are filing your return.

As the taxpayer, it is indeed your ultimate responsibility to ensure you have all of your slips - work closely with your financial advisor to confirm that you do.

Tax time can be onerous enough without adding more stress to the process!

Have You Taken Time For Self-Care Lately?

Haven't posted for awhile....decided to take some time for self care. Tax season was grueling and idea generation took a month off :)

My daughter got engaged and I helped her and her fiancé move into their first home! It's an exciting time for them, and I feel fortunate to watch them build their life together.

Rejuvenation seems much more difficult during COVID! Anyone else feel this way? As Alberta reopens I look forward to seeing friends and family that I've missed dearly.

Mental Health is soooo important; let's take care of each other! 💜

Stay tuned for upcoming posts including videos! Anything you want us to chat about on the topic of divorce or taxes, please let us know!

TAX FILING DEADLINE APRIL 30.......STILL!

The IRS extended the tax filing deadline to May 17 in the United States but no such luck here in Canada.

Amid the third wave of the pandemic, the Justin Trudeau government will not be extending the tax-filing deadline.

The CRA announced a one-year relief on the interest charged on income tax owing. Thus, you have until April 30, 2022, to pay your taxes without accruing interest, but you need to file your returns before April 30, 2021 and you had to have received some COVID-19 income benefits, and your 2020 total income should be below $75,000.

Another reason to get your taxes done on time is so that any government benefits you might received, are not delayed.

The Climate Action Incentive....Don't get caught double counting!

There are a few situations where couples and separated parents need to communicate about who will make the claim for this incentive.

If you and your spouse/common-law partner have different professionals prepare your tax returns, make sure you don't both make the claim for the two of you for the CAI, or worse, each make the claim for an individual. Most tax software defaults to make the claim, so we always check with our clients whose spouse/partner has their return prepared elsewhere. The claim for an individual is worth $490 and for a couple, $735 (or an extra $245 for a spouse/partner).

If you are separated/divorced, and have shared parenting, make sure you agree on who is claiming which child for the CAI, worth $245 per. Again, most software defaults to make this claim for the number of children entered in the software so it has to be overridden by the tax professional.

Better to be proactive than to have to pay money back.............
