Most of the time having a disc herniation does not mean that you need surgery, have a look at the images below!

This MRI shows 2 patients with herniated discs.

✅ One is small
✅ One large

Q: Who needs surgery?

A: Neither! Both had minor symptoms, and were doing well with Physiotherapy.

Great message here from Ali A. Baaj (Neurosurgeon).

Treat the person, not the scan.

When people have scans for low back pain, the report will always show “stuff”, but much of it can be poorly linked with pain. Research has shown that people who don’t have low back pain have disc bulges, disc degeneration, disc protrusions and facet joint degeneration.

Anyone out there with a hamstring injury?

Eccentric strengthening exercises have been proven in research to be the most effective way of recovering from a Hamstring injury.

Check out the exercises in the video and give them a try!

Want to return to sport faster after a hamstring strain? 🏃‍♂️

A 2013 paper found that using lengthening/eccentric exercises such as those in the video below helped return Swedish football players to the field much faster (28 vs 51 days on average) than conventional hamstring exercises (contract-relax stretching, standing hip extensions, pelvic lifts).

Any runners out there?? 🏃🏽‍♀️ 🏃

Recommendations for running injuries. Zoom in to read!

Are you a runner? Consider spending more time strengthening your calf muscles, importantly Soleus for optimum results!! (Try some weighted calf raises with your knees bent to 90 degrees)

Along with Gastrocnemius, Soleus is responsible for the action of plantarflexion of the ankle, as in the "push-off" phase of running.

“When it comes to running performance, it's not all about the GLUTES! Soleus produces far more force during running than any other muscle group of the lower limb.”

Great post by PN author Mick Hughes: Physiotherapist & Exercise Physiologist. He writes research reviews for us regularly. Find more info about them here: https://www.physio-network.com/memberships/

Hot tip from Mick: Heavy, seated calf raises 4x6-8 reps, 2x per week will do you and your running performance the world of good.

*Low Back Pain*

Another good research article! This one shows evidence that hip Abductor fatigability and recovery are contributing factors in the development of low back pain due to prolonged standing!

Therefore strengthening and improving endurance of your hip Abductor muscles may help reduce low back pain.

🏌️‍♂️🏋️‍♂️🤸‍♂️🏄‍♂️

Hip Abductor Fatigability and Recovery are Related to the Development of Low Back Pain During Prolonged Standing - Aug 2017

Objective: 'This study's purpose was to determine if hip abductor strength, fatigability, and recovery during prolonged standing were related to standing-induced low back pain. '

Results: 'Pain Developers (PD) hip abductors fatigued before Non Pain Developers (NPD) with similar perceived effort and force losses. Mean power frequency decreases with fatigue were similar between pain groups for all muscles measured after the fatiguing exercise. Unlike NPDs, PDs did not recover force losses after 120 minutes of standing.'

CONC: 'Hip abductor fatigability may be related to the development of low back pain in this population.'
