An invitational road tennis tournament is the first event the new executive of the CBC Sports and Cultural Club will be hosting come Whit Monday, June 09, 2014.

Dubbed In De Pine the event is expected to feature teams from across corporate Barbados and will be played in the CBC’s car park.
Assistant Secretary/Treasurer and CBC Sports Reporter Mellissa Farley who is lead coordinator for the event says two females are expected to be included in each team.

“It is going to be very competitive and a lot of fun as well. We expect full participation by both men and women. It will be a day to remember,” she noted. Farley adds that there will be individual prizes, medals and trophies to be won.

The new ten-member committee which was elected in April has as its slogan “building for the present with the future in mind.”
President Dale Forde says it captures the essence of what the club wants to achieve while in office.

“The CBC Sports Club has a rich heritage,” she said. “We want to build on that working closely with all our members which is the entire CBC family. We also want to develop closer relationships with our corporate friends and associates and of course most importantly the listeners and viewers who support us every day.”

Forde said the committee has finalised this year’s calendar of events which includes bus crawls and fund-raising events. “We’ll be revealing it very soon,” she said.

The tournament starts at 3:00 pm and is expected to end by 9:00 pm. All are invited.

The CBC team practicing for the "In De Pine" Road Tennis Competition. We are ready for battle.

Come June 9th, the CBC Sports and Cultural Club will be hosting the "In De Pine " Invitational Road Tennis Tournament.

Over the last few weeks courts were laid by staff from the National Sports Council in the outer car park of the CBC and new racquets were made by club member and CBC employee Derek Browne.

It has been a while since the CBC hosted a road tennis tournament, during the 1990's competitions held at the corporation were well supported.

Assistant Secretary Treasurer Mellissa Farley said this tournament is an invitational and the teams will soon be revealed; she also explained how the matches will be played.

Club president Dale Forde said the tournament was organised after calls from members.

So CBC invites you to bring your chairs and come out for a day of fun.

Road Tennis Tournament

When the CBC team starts practice for the upcoming In De Pine Road Tennis Tournament it won’t only be on new courts but it will be with new racquets as well.

Thanks to Derek Browne, a lighting technician at the CBC.
This multi-skilled member of the club is also a master craftsman and a lover of the game.

With much care and attention he has built the new racquets to meet the specifications of each team member.
The inaugural In De Pine Road Tennis Tournament – it’s going to be AWESOME!!!

WHAT YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT…She is the first female president of the Eden Stars Football Club based in the sometimes rough and tumble area of Eden Lodge, St. Michael. A resident there all her life Jacqueline Agard took up the post last year.
“Eden Stars has always been a beacon in the community,” she said. “After growing up and seeing the club involved in football I felt we needed to revive it after it wasn’t active for so long.”

She describes her district as a football community and with the encouragement of the senior players who are all men she ran for the post of president for the club and won. She and the committee have formulated a five-year plan with a mission to be in the premier league by then.

“The team is now leading the second division and is aiming to be in first. We know that will not be easy, but we are trying.”
The love of football has not stopped with Jacqui as she is affectionately known. Her 16-year old daughter Jadé is an avid player and also an amateur referee. Like some other girls in the neighbourhood Jadé wanted to play football, the female team started competing last year and while they have not yet won a game that has not dampened their enthusiasm.

“They lost the game but when they came home you would have thought they won, they were so excited, as we go on to build eventually we will get there,” Jacqui noted. Jacqui was just appointed as the manager of the Barbados Under 15 female football team and she is very excited about the new accomplishment.

But football is just a stepping stone to her real dream which is to bring her community closer together. “Most of the people in Eden Lodge come together, not only when there is football, but it can be cricket, an event at the school (Eden Lodge Primary) or a funeral. There have been some unfortunate situations in the area but most of the time it wasn’t residents of Eden Lodge.”
The former chairman of the St. Michael North Constituency Council will soon be starting a beautifying project and she is looking at other programmes that can bring a balance to sports as well.

At the CBC she is a Production Assistant working closely with Producers and Directors on live and recorded broadcasts, her duties include booking guests and conducting research. More than thirty years ago, fresh out of school she started as a TV License Clerk working from the CBC’s Palmetto Square office in Bridgetown. She prepared letters and bills for clients. Later she moved into the Pine as a receptionist and then into the Quality Control department where she reviewed all programmes before they were aired.

“I was looking for a job and I applied to CBC and I got through. Work was fun; my day would start at 8:00 am and at 7:00 pm you were still at work and you didn’t notice. We worked closely together like a team. We looked out for each other. There was always some activity to get involved in like picnics, we would celebrate each other’s birthdays and we would have Christmas parties.”

Jacqueline Agard...another proud member of The CBC Sports and Cultural Club.
