Pearls Dance Academy

Discovering The Pearl In You. Find it. Dance it. Serve it!

Pearls Dance Academy (PDA) is the home of the ABT® National Training Curriculum in the Caribbean where dancers find their pearl and serve it to the world. PDA emphasizes quality dance training, regular parent/student feedback and a friendly atmosphere.

Mission: Training, Inspiring and encouraging dancers across Barbados to see their innate abilities as a gift which can be used to bring positive change and development to their world.

@pearlsdanceacademy will highlight many dance pioneers including Michaela DePrince at TRIBUTES - our upcoming show at the Combermere School Hall, on July 13 & 14, 7:00pm.
.
1. Michaela DePrince was featured in the ballet documentary, First Position.
.
2. She debuted professionally as a guest principal at the Joburg Ballet in South Africa and appeared on Dancing with the Stars.
.
3. At the age of seventeen Michaela performed with the Dance Theatre of Harlem professional company.
.
4. At eighteen she joined the Dutch National Junior Company as a second-year member and apprentice to the main company.
.
5. In 2016 she was named an Ambassador for War Child Netherlands.
.
6. Michaela is now ranked as a soloist at Dutch National Ballet.
.
Besides dancing, Michaela loves reaching out to disadvantaged young people, with whom she shares her message of hard work, perseverance and hope, in order to encourage them to strive for a dream.

Forgiveness is often times the key to the next level where you can blaze a new trail.

Pearls Dance Academy is thrilled to pay tribute to many dance icons who continue to leave a legacy of triumph over the odds. At our upcoming show on July 13 & 14 we will highlight Michaela DePrince! Why? @michaeladeprince is an inspiration to many young ballerinas who come from disadvantaged backgrounds.
.
Born in war-torn Sierra Leone during the country’s civil war and with vitiligo, a disease that causes patches of skin to lose its color, she was called the devils child. An American family who supported the arts adopted her and soon recognized her talent for ballet.
.
She attended the Rock School for Dance Education in Philadelphia and the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School at the American Ballet Theatre and worked hard to develop her skills so that she could overcome stereotypes of conventional beauty and racial barriers in the world of ballet.

[05/28/19]   Here is Gene Kelly's best of the best – Singin' in the Rain.
.
The American Film Institute calls it the best musical of all time and the fifth best movie of all time.
.
With so many show-stopping performances – from Kelly's tap dance duet with Donald O'Connor in "Moses, Moses" to Kelly's sultry sway with Cyd Charisse in "Broadway Melody Ballet" – Singin' in the Rain has some of the best big-screen dancing ever.
.
– from Legacy.com ‘A Dance with Gene Kelly’ by Linnea Crowther.

TRIBUTE TRIVIA: Mikhail Baryshnikov (1948 - present) is a Russian male ballet trailblazer. He is considered one of the greatest dancers of our time.
.
After commencing a spectacular career with the Kirov Ballet in Leningrad, he came to the West in 1974, settling in New York City as principal dancer with American Ballet Theatre (ABT).
.
In 1978 he joined New York City Ballet, where he worked with George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins. A year later, he was appointed artistic director of ABT where, for the next decade, he introduced a new generation of dancers and choreographers.

"We're not born to chase the faded light. We're not born to fall and lose the fight. Never letting go. Oh no! Am asking you to lift me, lift me higher than I ever been. Hold your breath and say you're gonna come with me. We were born to follow the light that never fails." Andra Day - Light that Never Fails

When asked about her strengths as a dancer in an interview with DanceTabs writer Marina Harss, Virginia Johnson said.. "I was a very lyrical dancer. But my real strength was my persistence, my will to make this happen."
.
A lyrical dancer is one whose movement is very intuitive and embodies the emotional moods of a song’s lyrics or one who illustrates a story to compliment the musical score..
.
We can see Virginia Johnson’s lyrical essence coming to life in this video.

😀 At our upcoming show to be held on July 13 & 14 at the Combermere School Hall, the Primary Ballet students of the Pre-AKOYA Program at Pearls Dance Academy will do a tribute to Ms. Johnson's principal role in Creole Giselle.
.
To learn more about her, they did a glitter board as a class activity. Here is how it went down!

TRIBUTE TRIVIA: Virginia Johnson (1950 - present) is a trailblazer. She joined acclaimed Dance Theatre of Harlem (DTH) in 1969 as a founding company member, and prima ballerina. She was the inaugural editor-in-chief of Pointe Magazine, an nternational magazine aimed toward ballet dancers and students. Johnson served in that capacity from 2000 until she returned to DTH as its artistic director in 2009.

LAUREN ANDERSON is one of the dance trailblazers @pearlsdanceacademy is paying tribute to in its upcoming show to be held July 13 & 14 at the Combermere School Hall.

Here is what she had to say about why she thought she could be a ballerina...

"When I was nine years old, I saw Dance Theatre of Harlem for the very first time. I’ll never forget seeing that first black ballerina run across the stage. My mom said I literally moved to the edge of my seat. Then I saw another one, and another one, and I turned to my mom and said, mom, there is a whole stage full of them. Then I saw someone do Firebird, and I was like mom, I want to be here. So you don’t know until you know. Representation is why I thought I could be a ballerina."

Article by Simon Daniels

They said this was one of the best ballet classes they had! 😀 They still have to get back to plies, chasses and temp leves next class though! Happy our students know something about one dance trailblazer!

TRIBUTE TIVIA: Lauren Anderson (1965 - present) is a trailblazer. She became the first African American to be promoted to principal dancer at the Houston Ballet in 1990. Lauren continues to pour into young aspiring ballet students around the world. Stay connected to our page to see trivia about our next tribute!

Never a dull moment backstage. We love our young performers!

As an institution of dance in Barbados, @pearlsdanceacademy wants to build awareness about the long-standing local and international dance trailblazers who have paved the way for our students to participate in Ballet, Modern, Jazz, and Hip Hop classes.
~
~
So, our upcoming show will feature each dance style taught at the school with tributes to trailblazers like Michael Jackson, Alvin Ailey, Martha Graham, Kathrine Dunham, Michaela DePrince, Misty Copeland, Debbie Allen and Gene Carson just to name a few.
~
~
BUT above it all we want to inspire our students to become a TRAILBLAZER that impacts their world!
