Our lives depend on hope. If you have hope, you’ll be able to overcome problems you face. But if you’re without hope, your difficulties will increase. Hope is linked to compassion and loving kindness. In my own experience. I’ve faced all sorts of difficulties in my life, but I never gave up hope. Also, being truthful and honest is a basis for hope and self-confidence.

We all like certainty, comfort, success, positive adventures, fun, and progress. Sometimes this is difficult to achieve. How do we stay positive when things are challenging? What can we do to be strong, optimistic, and hopeful regardless of what life brings?

The practice of positivity is the answer. The ground-breaking broaden-and-build theory reveals that all we need to do is take a first step to evoke positive emotions inside us. The practice of positivity allows us to literally make ourselves feel good.

This workshop introduces a range of practices and exercises to feel the emotions we are yearning for: love, contentment, joy, hope, pride, inspiration, and serenity. It also discusses how to deal with negative emotions.

About fifteen years ago I went to see a counsellor who had been recommended to me. She listened to my story and challenges, asked a few questions, and then finally said, “What you need is not counselling. You need meditation.” I never forgot this. But shamefully, it took me many years until I finally persevered with meditation. And she was right; I had a swirling, overly perfectionist, catastrophising, ruminating mind as well as a lot of sadness and hopelessness because of my childhood. And I daresay meditation tackled them all.

Meditation is an approach to training the mind, similar to the way that fitness is an approach to training the body.

Benefits of mediation include:
🌿Lower blood pressure
🍃Improved blood circulation
🌿Lower heart rate
🍃Less perspiration
🌿Slower respiratory rate
🍃Less anxiety
🌿Lower blood cortisol levels
🍃More feelings of well-being
🌿Less stress
🍃Deeper relaxation

HOW TO MEDITATE: SIMPLE MEDITATION FOR BEGINNERS

This meditation exercise is an excellent introduction to meditation techniques.

Sit or lie comfortably. You may even want to invest in a meditation chair or cushion (some inspiration in this photo for you 😍)

Close your eyes.

Make no effort to control the breath; simply breathe naturally.

Focus your attention on the breath and on how the body moves with each inhalation and exhalation. Notice the movement of your body as you breathe.

Observe your chest, shoulders, rib cage, and belly. Simply focus your attention on your breath without controlling its pace or intensity. If your mind wanders, return your focus back to your breath.

Maintain this meditation practice for two to three minutes to start, and then try it for longer periods.

Meditation improved my psychological wellbeing significantly, I can’t recommend it enough 🌻

Frederickson found that the effects of positivity are nonlinear. This means that positivity does not conform to the rules of traditional linear science, in which an effect can be traced to a cause; thus the more you put in, the more comes out in proportion.

According to Frederickson, in nonlinear systems there is the chance of encountering the butterfly effect. The butterfly effect is a model in chaos theory, which stands for a set of initial conditions, from which a very small change (such as the flapping of a butterfly’s wings) can lead to a chain of events that results in a vastly disproportionate outcome.

Frederickson found that to flourish, one should maintain a positivity ratio of 3 positive emotions to every negative one.

As much as we talk about the practices and habits that contribute to our wellbeing and allow us to build a happier life, what if the journey is primarily within? It is!

Happiness occurs when we have high life satisfaction and more positive than negative emotions. So, if we feel thwarted in our goals and/or feel sad or frustrated a lot, this gets us down.

But here is the thing: It all depends on how we look at things and the attitude we adopt toward our circumstances. If our path is blocked, we can say: I will find a way around this. Or: I will wait until I can proceed but I’m not giving up. Or: that’s okay I’m going another way.

If we have suffered a major loss we can say: I’m doing it tough right now, but one day soon I will be feeling better.
Or: It’s okay to be sad but I will also try to find some joy in my day.
Or: This is pushing me to the edge but I’m going to call someone who can support me through it.

The inner journey is the ability to find the voice of reason and wisdom within us. We all have it, but our normal thoughts often over-power it.

Well, it’s a many-folded endeavour, which is supported by good physical health; positive relationships; a sense of meaning in our lives; having a purpose and well-defined goals; a few hobbies or activities that make us forget time and place; a sense of connection to the world and others; being able to achieve in areas that matter to us.

Alongside, we crucially need to find ways to experience joy, peace, and hope within our hearts.
But how do you do this? You start somewhere. You look at this list above and decide to do something toward one of these supporting ingredients toward a happy and fulfilling life. And how do you find peace within? Through a mindfulness or mediation practice, and the dedication to find a quiet reprieve from your thoughts.

Three things we have learnt through the pandemic so far:
🌿 Appreciating the outdoors, the fresh air, parks, forests, rivers and beaches, and the ability to sit in nature and have the sun warm us and the trees cool provide cool shelter.
🌿 The company of the people who matter in our lives. The support of our loved ones, our true friends, and how much we like to just hang out with the special people in our lives.
🌿 Our resilience and ability to stay strong in challenging times, to do our best to get on with life despite the frustrations and difficulties; something we tend to underestimate.

Find your Flow ✨

In positive psychology, a flow state (being in the zone), is the mental state in which a person performing some activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and enjoyment in the process of the activity. In essence, flow is characterized by the complete absorption in what one does, and a resulting transformation in one's sense of time

Flow state can be experienced in almost any activity that has clearly defined goals and a balance between the difficulty of the challenge and the skills of the individual.

While certain activities are likely to encourage a flow state, such as games, sports, and the arts, you can also experience flow within the workplace and other day-to-day activities.
